Could be. One purpose of the rally and speeches appears to have been to transfer the responsibility for the loss of the election to Pence, who Trump believed (or at least said he believed) could refuse the Governor's certifications of the electors, based on the State's vote in the swing states. When Pence, who had ALREADY told the President that he could not, didn't and began the count process, that seems to have been the signal to storm the Capitol and disrupt the process being carried out by the joint session. It's possible that was the only goal or was also intended to be a step toward a Presidential declaration of martial law, leading to the overthrown of the federal government. The Nazis, I believe, used th excuse of the Reichstag Fire as the excuse to call for the Reichstag (the German Parliament) to legally vote Hitler "emergency powers," which he then never relinquished.

 

Though Americans choose most of their elected officials by popular vote, the selection of a U.S. president is not as direct.

The presidency is decided by vote of the Electoral College, a temporary slate of 538 electors, all chosen by their state political parties. Each elector casts one vote; a presidential candidate needs 270 of these votes to win.

The process has faced mounting criticism, starting in the controversial 2000 presidential election, in which Republican George W. Bush defeated Democrat Al Gore, despite having lost the popular vote.

President Donald Trump also lost the popular vote while winning the Electoral College to defeat Hillary Clinton in 2016.

Now that Joe Biden has won Pennsylvania, and the Presidency, all eyes are on the Electoral College. This is how it works, and how it will come into play in the 2020 race:

Agreed. And, I think he genuinely believes that if he doesn't win (by hook or crook) a second term, he'll be a "loser" by his own definition. So...as that comes closer to a certainty, the madness becomes more extreme...and obvious.

 

Trump doesn't and won't consider himself a loser. He wants a second term in the worst way and thinks he deserves one. He won't as the majority of voters have spoken.

 

Could be...there could be more to come. I've said for the last four years that he'll eventually talk himself into jail. Of course, his access to media is rapidly disappearing, so fewer and fewer are going to hear him.

 

Trump is going to face a lot of trouble in the future. Nobody really know what he'll do next, Trump is a grown man and acts like a spoiled brat like a ticking time bomb not knowing when it will explode.

I think the House of Representatives are out to impeach Trump and they're voting on it this week. You should know that if Trump is Impeached and find him guilty, He's barred from Public Office forever and they mean it.

 

I would urge the Philadelphia Phillies to ditch their red hats and go back to the color scheme they used in 1947. The color red will forever associated with domestic terrorism.

How would he overthrow the government and remain in office? It's over for him. Now the only possibility would be a military coup and the military chiefs do not support him.

 

We know there were traitors within the ranks of the DC police tasked with protecting the capital I wonder how many assassins Trump will have planted within the inauguration security force.

 

That wouldn't make Trump remain in power. If Biden is assassinated, the president is Harris, and if Harris is also assassinated, the president is Pelosi and so on and so forth in the line of succession. There is no constitutional path whatsoever for Trump to remain in power past 12 noon on 1/20/2021. Once the Electoral College votes are counted and certified like they were on1/6-7/2021, it's irreversible and Trump having lost his bid for re-election, his term ends on 1/20/21 at 12 noon, no matter what. It is true that if all three were assassinated the president would again be a Republican, Chuck Grassley (president pro tempore of the Senate), but not Trump.

 

I agree with you. I suspect he still personally feels there may still be a way. It will probably pass...he's had a lot of failures to adjust to in life.

I think the entire OUTDOOR inauguration should be (and should already have been) scrapped. Just do it in the White House.
All you need is a President Elect, a bible and a Chief Justice. That's how Gerald Ford was sworn in.

This may seem defeatists but with Covid and last weeks riots in mind it might be the smartest thing to do.
Then you don't need a massive security operation that might be useful elsewhere.

The Reds have already been through the wringer. Back in 1953 their name was changed to the Redlegs. None of the players on the team were suspected of being communists. It was a strange time.

 

I am inclined to agree. There is every valid reason to do this. Don't care how some binary thinkers might interpret it..............We are talking about the lives of this new central cast.

Agreed. Only make sure there are enough police there this time to do it.

 

Or do it in Camp David. I had proposed as much. But I do understand that this would not be the best look; the US Government would be retreating in fear of domestic terrorists.

So, yes, do it inside the White House and put thousands of National Guardsmen around the White House to prevent any funky business.
