You don't know how long power will be out, but if you have any common sense, you know your pipes may freeze in very cold temps. Why would you just do nothing and risk a broken water pipe?

I'm on a well, so if power goes out, my system to keep pipes from freezing will not work so I must shut off pump and drain pressure tank.

Democrats act like it's the end of the world. I have been through far worse twice here in Iowa and few politicians acted like they cared.

The inland Derecho here in Iowa was a disaster and the media barely covered it.

These people will be just fine. A warm up is occurring and power is back on. That just leaves the water situation which will be fixed eventually.

This was nothing more than a political circus.

If we can survive worse here in Iowa with little help from politicians I think Texas will be just fine.

Earth's natural warming and cooling periods can cause irregularities in weather patterns.

Agree. I only know about the derecho there because a YT channel from Iowa showed what happened to them. Otherwise, I would not have known.

You really shouldn't compare Arctic Tundra to a Tropical Coast

A derecho has nothing to do with cold/freezing weather. A derecho however does cause severe property loss due to hurricane force winds and definitely prolonged loss of power.

This is what gets to me about conservatives. They find a bunch of pols who don't do what they should and they conclude that ALL pols shouldn't do anything, Libs conclude that pols should do their jobs

It was crazy but I knew it was coming. I always check the storm prediction center alot.

They were predicting the derecho but the warning called for 80+ MPH winds. What we actually saw was 70-80+ MPH winds from western Iowa to Des Moines and then they increased getting up to 140 MPH across east central Iowa. 70-80+ MPH winds and a few tornadoes continued all the way across Illinois and Indiana with damage to buildings from Des Moines to Chicago and even past that.

At least 1 person died I think in Indiana when a mobile home was tossed, most of Iowa was without power, some places for over 2 weeks and many power lines, grain bins and some buildings were demolished. Trees down everywhere. Some towns saw almost all trees go down. I was without power for over a week and all of my food in my fridge went bad.

I warned my family the tornado sirens would soon be sounding. When it hit I heard a loud bang and the power went off. My roof shingles all went flying off my house, it flooded in my bedroom and a tree branch came down within feet of my house landing on powerlines. Powerlines layed everywhere across town.

One of my brothers had a tree branch fly through his window and shatter his TV while he was trying to hold up Another window. Another tree came down on his truck.

Most of the cornfields across central Iowa we're completely destroyed financial hurting farmers.

We have had Derechoes before but that was still scary.

In February of 2007 Iowa had a significant Ice Storm knock down trees and power for about a week. My family was freezing but we lit candles and stayed under blankets. We survived.

Texas has it far easier. Politics made this seem like the worst thing ever and both parties are to blame for that.

See my above post. I was without power for a week in freezing temps. I don't remember any politicians offering help and I survived.

The Derecho was a life threatening inland Hurricane that killed people and had 140 MPH winds and the news mostly ignored it.

Texas will be fine. Fear mongering is all this is.

Looks like Texas taxpayers will bail out the people who got incredibly low electricity prices most of the time, until the mini-blizzard. Maybe signing onto a variable rate plan with no price cap if prices escalated wasn't a bad idea after all.

29,000 Griddy customers with average $5,000 bills is probably "a little more" than AOC raised for political showmanship.

Governor Abbott Holds Emergency Meeting With Legislature To Address Spike In Texas Energy Bills

“We have a responsibility to protect Texans from spikes in their energy bills that are a result of the severe winter weather and power outages,” said Governor Abbott.

"The discussion with legislators focused on the need to quickly calculate the total cost of these energy bills and how the state can help reduce this burden."

Governor Abbott requested personal federal disaster relief from the Biden administration. "Personal" here means helping individual citizens, instead of just throwing a chunk of money to the state. Approval would pay for plumbing and other home repairs from the freeze if the property owner either doesn't have insurance or if their property insurance refuses to pay.

Biden approved disaster relief for 77 out of Texas' 254 counties. Some people will get assistance. Others won't, unless Biden expands approval to cover all people, not just those in major "blue" urban areas.

She already gets plenty of publicity. Why do so many people hate her? Some of us just do things to help because we're in a position to do so. There isn't an ulterior motive in EVERY good action.

My power will be down as long as it takes me to gas up my generator and start it up. In the meantime I have a portable radio which will run for days on batteries and lots of batteries on my shelf. It's no different from when I lose power if a hurricane hits. If the outside temperature is going go below 30F, although it takes about 25F for a few hours before I would have a problem, I crack open my faucets which keeps water moving and also allows for expansion if they do start to ice up. I also have a main water shutoff where my waterline enters the house which I can close and further drain the system.

Why? If I don't carry the extra rider on my homeowners policy and a hurricane rips off my roof and my house is destroyed is the federal government going to buy me a new house?

One of the public service commissioners was on TV this morning and announce that 10 minutes previous it was announce potable water was now available to all areas and the boil before use was being rescinded.

But AOC and Biden are going to save the day!!!

Only if Biden "approves" federal disaster relief for your particular county. If not, and you're on the wrong side of a county line, you're on your own.

I do agree with your sentiment though. The feds shouldn't be spending Americans' tax dollars on people who didn't get their property insured.

She sure has you fooled but not me.

There has been plenty of disasters for her to prove she cares about humanity and the only one she chooses is the same one Republicans made political By blaming her renewable energy and new green deal.

She is in a position do alot in DC but seems to care more about moving up in her party and getting attention.

Haha. We're with the government and we're here to help! FEMA send a couple million bottles of water to Texas and some blankets. They started distribution yesterday in Austin. Yesterday was 60 degrees and sunny. We got full water pressure back overnight last night. Good timing. :p

She doesn't have me fooled. I would have appreciation toward ANY person that works in service for others. I've done it my whole adult life and learned that most people couldn't give a d*mn about others. I'm not aligned with any particular party so I have no reason to appreciate any specific person over another. She's doing *something* to help. That's all that matters.

and as usual, when right wing wonks are caught flat footed not being able to logically or factually substantiate their claims and assertions, they resort to the nonsense we see done here by apexofpurple. They do this in a lame attempt to deflect from their failures while never admitting they were just plain wrong. Sad, but not unexpected. Once reduced to this level, I dump them in the IA bin, as to not take up time and space.

Just going to cut you off there. Read my signature. Then go read about AOC's and ActBlue's history with mismanaging money. Then re-read everything I've said, each reply I've drafted (particularly the ones saturated with mocking parody of MSM 'anon sources'), then come back and tell me if you think I give a damn about this 6th grade level 'gotcha' game you and others have tried to lay on me. Oh, um, err, ohhh... I didn't give you a link saying the thing you want it to say, as you would frame it, from a source you would accept? Awwww.

Most people here, I think based on what they've said/liked, recognized that early post for what it was: a prediction of the future evidenced from the past. But some of you expected me to have, hell I don't even know, internal company confidential memos detailing the plot? And I know you came at me that way only because you're lacking information. You don't know how these 'charity' organizations work, you don't know AOC's or ShareBlue's history, you don't know how many legal ways there are to skim money off the top. But when these things come out, and they always do, its at the end of the fiscal period in which the required documentation for donations collecting has to be filed. Remind me then, I'll do the leg work and find it for ya ok? And if I'm wrong, which I wont be, I'll make a donation to a charity of your choosing. Alright? Good deal.
