and that creates a very paranoid society. The premise being that some one is going to attack..........almost a kind of wish fulfillment...to "justify" gun ownership.

When the words were written ...... what was America like ..............

It was not civilized by any stretch Has nothing changed since then?? This gun fanaticism is unique to this country.....Weapons are a key part of the american identity. One that is self reinforcing. The problem seems to be societal....... and the amount of aggression and violence that is a part of it ........and that includes verbal "violence". Perhaps what is needed is a a collective attitude change in the population. The Me first attitude is part of the issue. Society is a network........and works when people collaborate. Me first does not lend itself to a healthy society. The point is that it is a much larger issue than just guns.

Maybe we should go back to allowing the number of guns per capita that we had during the revolutionary war.

Please donate MORE of your money to the NRA.

They desperately need more lawyers to defend themselves against their various "behaviors".

You cannot demonstrate the necessity for, or the efficacy of, doing this - so, no.

No, you claimed we haven't changed - that widespread ownership of firearms has been with us from the start.

But there has been gigantic change since then.

Nobody could take a 1700's firearm into an elementry school in New York and mow down 20 children and 6 adults.

That's one of a large number of changes.

    Correct. Then as now.
And then I described the change.
    Try. To. Keep. Up.

My first thought when I heard about this was too bad no one in this store had a gun and training in using it. Might have saved several lives. Has been the case many times.

This problem will not be solved ever. If the suspect couldn't buy an AR, he would have killed these people with a different kind of gun. If he couldn't buy any gun legally, he would have bought one illegally. If he couldn't do that, he would have made a bomb.

If you make it illegal for mentally disabled folks to have a gun, you will run up against the people paid to advocate for them, who will say it's not fair, and in many cases, they would be right. And how would we decide that anyway? What scale do we use? How do we decide and who decides? Is it just paranoid schizophrenics we don't want to have guns? What about those who just have minor depression? Or those who have "a hot temper"? And many of these folks, who are demonstrably insane, have never actually seen a doctor and been diagnosed, and don't have any friends to sound an alarm, so what about that?

As a second amendment rights enthusiast, here is what I think would be fair: Any person who has a conviction for a violent offense loses their gun rights. This excludes DUI and other non-violent offenses. When their prison term or other punishment is over, if they go for ten years without getting in trouble, their gun rights are reinstated. Background checks should be done on all gun sales, including gun shows and personal sales. A database should be publicly available to everyone, so any individual could find out with a couple of clicks if the potential buyer can buy a gun. If the person is not on the list, the seller prints out the info and keeps it, in order to protect himself.

Even so, this stuff is still going to happen. It's a problem of the heart. If someone is determined to hurt people, they will find a way to do so.

So what do you suggest as a screening procedure to prevent folks with serious mental unhealth problems gaining access to weapons.?? Or does it matter??

On a scale of one to ten......how ESSENTIAL is having a gun?? Let's leave the "right to bear arms" out of it for a bit.
(just because one has the right.......does not mean one has to have it) Now......if one lives in a high crime neighborhood..........then it seems prudent to have security .

AR15's seem to be the choice of rifle by shooters. Say AR-15's are outlawed and no one can buy them. Then shooters start using shotguns instead which are extremely deadly in close quarters. Will shotguns become the next target to be banned? Most likely yes. Do you see where this is going? It's not the gun that is deadly it's the person using the gun to kill that is deadly. All guns in the wrong hands are deadly. The only way to stop the senseless killings by guns is to ban all guns and that will never happen.

You're right - the Democrats plan to ban this and register that and license everything --- and offer gun owners absolutely nothing they see of value in return.
You don't offer compromise and you don't expect compromise -- you demand acquiescence.
This is why gun owners refuse to give an inch.

Oh brother. Not ever going to happen. Do you not understand how personally invasive such a test would be? So if someone fails the test will they be placed in a psychiatric hospital against their will because the test determines they want to hurt themselves or others? And who would administer such a test?

    Mass shootings?
    No. That's handguns.
More mass shootings have been committed with handguns, and more people have been murdered with handguns than -all- 'assault weapons', let alone AR15s
    Indeed.
Every mass shooting committed with a' assault weapon' - save one- could have been equally committed with a pump-action shotgun.

Well, the GOP has stated EMPHATICALLY that your idea is not acceptable.

The GOP has even steadfastly refused just to do background checks with no other modifications or additions.

See, every issue has a solution.
However, I've never seen the solution you proposed. I'd say that is your solution. But it's a solution.

https://www.khou.com/article/news/c...ass,Americans own more than 8 million of them.
AR-15 is the weapon of choice in mass shootings
The National Rifle Association has called the AR-15 — the semi-automatic, civilian version of the military's M-16 — the "most popular rifle in America" and estimates Americans own more than 8 million of them.

This is all just total bs. You REALLY need to keep up.

The suggestions do not have anything to do with requiring a psych test.

The basic idea is that if someone has serious mental issues in their medical record, those should be considered when they want firearms.

It's somewhat similar to the question of what is a rational approach to those with wife beating, separation orders and other such issues on their records.

There are states that have police confiscate guns in cases of domestic violence. Do we somehow have to allow them to go down to the local minimart or tradeshow and buy more guns and ammo with same day service?

The GOP says yes, by the way.

There are all sorts of restrictions and limits on owning arms. As a well regulated militia would.

The real issue is where the line in the sand gets drawn.

Valid points. So how do we get humans be mores responsible gun owners...........and what is the best option to prevent these mass shootings?? It is a people problem. A gun left to its own devices will not go on a shooting spree.

I have no say in solving this issue.
If the outrage after the Stoneman school mass shooting, there will never be any meaningful change.

The only solution ever proposed is, 'our thought and prayers' to the families.

I own a couple of guns. I only use 1 though for deer hunting.
And I don't live in a city, so your wall solution won't work for me. But if you want to wall in your city, go to you city council meetings and propose it. You may be on to something.

We don't just give our troops any old firearm, as if all firearms are equally deadly.

Guns alone don't kill anyone, but they can make a dangerous person more deadly.

I would be surprised if there aren't any weapons that you would want to see kept out of the hands of private individuals, just because a broken person could do so much damage with them.

No. And of course you know this.
Well regulated militia is the reason for arms rights. Not self defense from your neighbor.

You realize that the original purpose was so that it would be controlled by individual state governments, and they could protect themselves.
