It will be interesting to see how this works out for the state. Maybe it will help for citizens to be armed and able to protect themselves. The police can't be everywhere.

    What do you think?

What is the big deal in getting a permit to purchase a gun?

More people, both criminally intent and lawfully intent, will be carrying weapons as a result of this loosening of restrictions. Given that the criminally intent are less likely to have been worried about the law before, they were more likely already carrying. So this law reduces decentivization for the lawfully intent to carry far more than it reduces decentivization for the criminally intent to carry. As a result, more lawfully intent people will be armed relative to criminally intent people armed. Given that criminals are less likely to commit crime where they fear being shot, and now they will have reason to fear more likely being shot, they are going to be more cautious about committing crime, especially violence. This is a win for society as a whole (except for the criminally intent, of course). I hope more states follow suit.

The second amendment covers that. It's not necessary.

I think we will see fewer violent crimes in TN.

Why do I get the feeling that this is going to cause a lot of people to die who didn't need to?

Perhaps folks in TN remember the guy who recently shot up the waffle hut and want to be able to return fire just in case. When do you suppose the police will actively stop crazy people from going to places that are gun free zones to kill people?

What do you mean? According to gun proponents, this kind of thing will allow people to defend themselves against criminals thereby making their communities safer. This seems especially dangerous because there is no requirement for anyone to have training on firearm usage and safety. I guess only time will tell if this is a good idea.

I mean I don’t know? Maybe we should encourage people to have training before getting a gun? And institutionalize that as a state function. But who knows? Maybe that’s my east coast liberal brain talking.

I agree with you but it could be my Midwest "liberal" (I was just called out as a liberal the other day) brain talking. ;-)

Ugh these "gun righters" are just too smart for us liberals. I mean, who would actually argue in favor of letting people who don't know basic gun safety from owning guns and carrying them around in public? Those gun rights are just sooooo smart.

What’s the big deal in getting a permit to speak freely? To get an abortion? To write a news article?

Are you in favor of not letting people who don’t know basic civics, or economics vote?

People are more than welcome to take courses and learn about their possessions. There is no requirement from the gov to get involved. You have to practice gun safety at all ranges, that’s the right of the business owner to enforce.
Is there a reason to keep pushing gov control needlessly?

You mean like make sure that people who carry guns in public know how to carry a gun in public?

Because guns kill people and you should probably know where the safety is before going into town with it.

I’ve seen worse strawman but I’ll bite. Geez, I do because they have different ideas of politics. I don’t think the same standard applies to whether or not you should stare down the barrel of a loaded gun and wonder how to clean it.

You see freedom of speech or write a news article as the same right to own/use a gun? I can appreciate your concern about abortion, while I don't agree with it. And, over the years, women have had to jump through many hoops in order to get a legal abortion. The willful ignorance as to the dangers of firearms is astonishing to me - but as with other posters, I know that we will not see things the same.

    they don’t though. People do.

I see you don’t know whether a strawman means. I asked a question. I didn’t make up an argument and attribute it to you.

Keeping and bearing arms is an actual protected constitutional right. Voting is not. I don’t need to justify owning or carrying a firearm to you or anyone else. You, do not need to prove you have even a basic understanding of civics or economics to vote. That’s called freedom.

Obviously. They are literally the first 2 amendments of the constitution.

And those hoops were rightfully struck down in roe v wade.
Who is ignorant of the dangers of firearms? And what does the dangers of firearms have to do with the constitutional right we have to keep and bear them? Why do you feel you can infringe on one of my rights but I can’t infringe on one of yours?

When you equate the danger of a gun to the danger of free speech, it gives me the impression that you under estimate the danger of firearms. Again - I think we will not ever see things the same way, so I wish you a good evening.
