That doesn't mean slavery was invented in the United States or that we were the only country that had slaves.

Slavery started WAY before the US was even colonized. Like, ancient times.

 

They're saying that America invented keeping blacks as slaves. Which, of course, is false.

 

The US is great, but that doesn't mean it's perfect. Indeed a large part of our greatness comes from the fact that we admit our faults and try to do something about them, and our ignoring those faults is one of the reasons we're a lot less great than we once were.

 

In respect to many Central and Latin American nations damned close. Just as one frex look at all the Democratically elected governments we overthrew to install tyrants who we then supported against their own people.

OTOH, It has to be wondered whether Ancient or even some forms of modern Slavery were really what we would call slavery at all. If you examine slavery in the Ottoman or late Roman Empires the word 'servitude seems much more appropriate. Race-based slavery in the US and the Caribbean was truly the "Peculiar Institution" indeed, resembling nothing so much as what the Nazis practiced in WWII.

 

This is plainly false, lol. Romans had their slaves fight to the death for pure entertainment. Adding "race based" to slavery to make it sound like there was some special kind of slavery in the US is revisionist and naive. Conquered people were sold into slavery. There were slaves all over the world. For the US, it was most efficient to get slaves from the West Coast of Africa than from India or China.

 

Nat Turner didn't in particular preach he, for better or worse acted. Got himself and a bunch of other black people killed, but did give the lie to the stupid notion of them 'd' just be content down on the plantation. Note without Caucasians there is no underground railroad.

and it is also not what we are saying. after bacon's rebellion whites were allowed to marry, have children, and were promised property in the west as a reward for a set time of faithful service. blacks were bred as animals, to other slaves but as likely to their masters their slavery was forever except in rare cases discouraged by law.their children were property and family attachments were not encouraged.

 

While all of that seems consistent with my understanding of history, it's not the reason that blacks were brought here, almost exclusively, from the beginning. I contend it was a matter of cheap labor (cheap, not free, because there was a cost to transporting West Africans to the Americas). Had Native Americans been as easy to "domesticate", there was a ready-made population of slaves here.

This sounds horrible, and racsism was a part of it. But to blame America for this and ignore slavery's history prior to the discovery of the "New World" is naive at best and dishonest at worst.

I'll never get this either. Nobody is saying the US is perfect. That is no reason not to place it first in our politics or shame the people living here today for passed transgressions.

 

The truth of slavery in the US hasw never been denied and has been taught in schools for over a century. The lert has this bizzare notion that the right wants to erase the bad parts of Us history which has never been true.

There is simply no reason to focus on the bad OVER the good.
