Nice thread, and for once, without a political tinge. I think the problem you are having is that some people are expecting a political tinge. You did a nice job putting together a nice polling thread, I am sure that a number of people here appreciate that.
Or even better: "Ohne Scheuklappen durch's Leben gehen" Which translates to: "to go through life without blinders on"
I respectfully disagree with you. For about 1 billion devout Catholics, it really is important to know who Il Papa is. And I am saying that as a Jew, to note. Also, some popes have served for the public good, wheareas others did harm, most notably Pius XI, one of the most despicable creatures of the 20th century who gladly got in bed with Hitler as long as Hitler signed the Konkordiat, which established a church tax in Germany and most interestingly, that shitty law is still on the books.
Stat, you can disagree with me. The sun will rise tomorrow. I promise. No worries. I don't disagree with that. I object to "knowing the Pope(s)" somehow speaks to someone's intelligence or lack thereof. We are going to clash on this one. ALL Popes in my lifetime have basically ignored the plight of the many victims of childhood sexual abuse. All Popes in my lifetime have publicly condemned abortion although their nuns force that upon young women who seek counsel from the RCC. All Popes in my lifetime have publicly condemned the use of condoms as it speaks to "spilling one's seed" despite the reality that condoms, while not 100% effective, help to prevent unwanted pregnancies and/or sexually transmitted disease. Mother Teresa is beloved among many. It is said that she was one of the most evil, apathetic and hypocritical faces of the church anyone has ever met. I never met her but my ex did and I have a few (late) friends who knew her. All of their opinions were consistent on who she REALLY is. So, again, the Pope can live in the palace with his gold chalices for centuries to come. Until they get off that high horse and recognize their "plan" isn't working, we are going to continue to have unwanted pregnancies often leading to neglect and/or abuse or outright abandonment and rampant spread of sexually transmitted diseases. There is nothing in the above that speaks to anything other than evil.
Good posting and thanks for writing it. I do not deny that every pope in the modern age has cast a blind eye to the sexual abuse within the Roman Catholic Church. However, that does not encompass all that the Pope of the RCC does. Just sayin...
When I made this list it did not mean that I agreed with all those popes. On the contrary - I don't. But now it seems that I am held responsible by some here for all those popes. Like I was some Pope Lindis the First!
What else do they do except teach families to reject their homosexual children, blame, ostracize and shun parishioners who are grieving the loss of a loved one who died by suicide, tolerate cheating partners and keep tithing while they spend the bulk of that money on more real estate, more gold stuff for their churches and hiring attorneys to bully and silence and shun people who speak out against their less than hard stance against pedophilia committed by their representatives throughout the world? Pretty shoes, maybe?
The question was and is: "Popes in your lifetime". A pope may be as bad as anything - still he is a pope of your lifetime. And so well worth your click. Some may re-act automatically like robots to the very word "pope" and spill a never-ending stream of foaming hatred. I had no intention to trigger them.
@ Pope John Paul I conspiracy theories There are some such theories concerning the way he died: More: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_John_Paul_I_conspiracy_theories
The Popes I remember are the one who got shot, the one who was in the Hitler Youth and the current one. Of all the Popes in my lifetime I think Francis is the only one who has really tried hard to reform and fight corruption. Frankly I'm surprised they haven't bumped him off yet.
He was not there of his own free will. All the boys of his age had to be there. And he was no Nazi, on the contrary. I think it a bit un-fair to continue harping on that topic, without knowing anything about the background. If you have lived then and there, you would also have been drawn into the Hitler youth. Only by the grace of God you did not live in those days. Be thankful for it.
