"This is the democratic way of defeating a threat to democracy. Not doing it is how democracies die. I am quite aware that it is highly unlikely; America does not have the flexibility of a parliamentary, proportional-representation system," columnist Thomas Friedman wrote Tuesday. "And yet, I still think it is worth raising. There is no precedent for how close we're coming to an unraveling of our democracy, either."

Friedman pondered if the United States should borrow a page from the Israeli-Palestinian arena, where, he wrote, a diverse national unity government has recently been formed.

"We should be ready to talk about Liz Cheney as part of a blow-your-mind Israeli-style fusion coalition with Democrats. It is a coalition that says: 'There is only one overriding goal right now - that is saving our democratic system,'" political scientist Steven Levitsky told Friedman.

I'm sure everybody's first thought (mine was) will be to sneer at this idea, but in a weird way, it's not the worst idea I've seen ..... hell..... today.

In addition to the Israel comparison, it would be sort of like Churchill's wartime coalition government, with Attlee from Labour as his Deputy PM, with the goal of both governments to fight fascism...

If T**** runs again (figuratively, of course), having Cheney on the ticket MIGHT be another way for the few remaining fence sitters to vote for democracy... Of course, NOT having Cheney on the ticket in 2020 worked out pretty well anyway, but it's theoretically possible picking Cheney over Harris would return an even larger mandate and crush any remote "election rigging" nonsense T**** will try in 2024.

Assuming this won't happen, and Liz loses in Wyoming to whatever loose cannon they come up with, I would strongly advise Joe to give both her and Kinzinger medium sized, limited political roles in his 2nd term.... They've earned them and you should always try and reward the brave.

    Anybody for a mixed ticket?

I’d rather have Cheney at the top of the ticket. Even though I disagree with her on many, many things. But she has proven herself to me a woman for all seasons. Compare her to sniveling cowards like Ted Cruz.

Cheney has stated that she sides with Republicans in attacking our voting rights.

We can't have a VP who is happily attacking our democracy.

    I agree.

But, her willingness to assault our democracy is a flat out DQ.

Looks like the left is finally admitting that Harris is not just worthless, but also a liability even though she brings the check boxes the left values so much. It also signals an admission the democrats have moved too far left, dangerously too far, and they know the voters don’t like it. So now they have to sprinkle in Dick Cheney’s daughter, of all people, if they want to hold on to power.

Biden and Dick Cheney would be awesome. That would be the worst ticket in history unless Hillary wants to run again. Yes, Hillary - Harris would be worse. :)

The left claims Biden received 80+ million votes and now they’re claiming people can’t vote? Harris said we are the worlds role model when it comes to voting, so why change things? Yeah, we know why.

And this left wing thing about constantly saying our democracy is under attack is crazy since democrats control everything. Stop pushing fear to low info voters.

    Nonsense.

The issue is that there is an ever widening chasm between the parties to a degree that is very clearly bad for America.

If there are moves that could correct that, it could be worth some amount of sacrifice.

Our current VP is female and not white.

Do you think Republicans would respond to her in some way better than death threats?

The NYT columnist is very optimistic. Doubtful Biden will still be lucid in 2024.

    LOL!!

Republicans own a lot of state houses and they are using that power to assault democracy.

It's not like the insurrection (that include a number of elected Republicans) was the only weapon the RNC has.

I should point out that Cheney has stated that she is in favor of the Republican assault on our democracy.

    This isn't coming from Dems.

    Cheney vs Cruz

    Competency - Cheney
    Common Sense - Cheney
    Balls - Cheney

If she wants to be at the top of a ticket, she'll have to do that on her own, either in the GOP or as an I...

It's an opinion thought piece by a columnist, not a statement of intent to be signed in blood...

Think you are reading a WEEEEEE bit too much into this....

If we have to win again with Harris, so be it... If the possibility is there to ****ing crush fascism with Cheney, it needs to be noodled out, although @WillReadmore has killed the idea for me with a simple fact....

How are they assaulting democracy? By having voting laws similar to Biden’s home state?

Here’s what it comes down to in my mind, does the media report on a party’s agenda, or does a party base its agenda on what the media reports? If a party bases its agenda on what the media reports, and I think democrats are very guilty of that, then it’s the media who is creating the chasm, them and our school system.

Which "voting rights" is she attacking?

I'm waiting for liberals to trot out actual real citizens who were eligible to vote but denied the right to vote.

It's a crock of **** to install massive voter fraud as a permanent democrat advantage.

Damn, and I did my best to hide that fact by listing "NYT" as the first word in the thread title...

Was hoping you guys would think that is Newt Gingrich's new crypto-trading nickname....

Yes, you mentioned the Times then downplayed everything by calling it a thought piece by one columnist. Clearly the Times thought enough to publish it.

It's been clearly demonstrated that your crap about fraud is itself a major fraud.

And, Republicans are using that to make moves that ensure fewer can vote.

Plus, they are gerrymandering (look it up!) their districts, causing those they HATE to have less representation even when they manage to vote.
