Wow, this is really scary. This would have been a literal, illegal coup.

Trump had a draft Executive Order in hand, ordering the National Guard to LITERALLY seize all voting machines across the United States.

Never before has the US military been involved in a US election, never before have they been ordered to violate such a seperation of powers.

Thank God this did not happen. Trump would have been arrested and tried for treason if he had done this.

I have no doubt that if Trump did give this order, the National Guard would have 100% refused, Trump would have been immediately removed from power using the 25th Amendment, OR the military would have arrested him on their own.

    Oy vey.

Trump had some very smart people on his payroll that told him not to do this, or he would be toast.

Or his entire legal team and cabinet threatened to quit. Or they threatened to use the 25th Amendment on him.

The January 6th "insurrection" will go the way of the Russia, Russia, Russia collusion hoax and Hillary's emails....

Donald Trump will never be indicted for anything, and will never see a single day behind bars. Might as well come to terms with it now. The best you can hope for is that he is unable to run again in 2024....

I think that's one you're going to lose. (the "right" prays that's true, but like Pearl Harbor and 911, January 6th 2021 is seared into the American psyche)

I won't be surprised if you got that one right. (tRump's a crook, but a damn good one)

Even if the national guard would do it, there are not enough national guard to accomplish this task in less than a few weeks.

The more I think about this, the more unlikely it becomes. First of all, unless the guard is nationalized, the President has no control over them. The guards belong to the states, Red and Blue. I am fairly sure that most of the blue states and probably the red states would refuse. Then it takes time to get the guard together. They are generally not on any kind of leash which requires them to be within a certain time to report to duty. It would likely take a week or two just to round up most units and more for some others.

Also, the guard is sworn to protect and defend the Constitution, not the president. They might conceivably collect them, but the vast majority would refuse to tamper with them or allow them to be tampered with.

I am guessing I have a lot more faith in our military than you do, but it is simply not going to happen.

If their evidence is so good, why did they only allow three republicans that were proven Trump haters that voted “yes” on the sham impeachment?
Politically, it is better for them to ignore all of Americas crises and count on big tech to do the heavy lifting.
Try as they may, live was good under Trump and bad under democrats.

So enjoy your hate-on, ‘cuz you got a referendum on yourselves coming in ten months.

The state National Guard is organized into units stationed in each of the 50 states, three territories, and the District of Columbia, and operates under their respective state or territorial governor. Not the president.
Not to mention, it would be an impossible task
Jesus what a bag of bulls*** the left will swallow on command.

There would be fewer criminals if you hadn't voted for Trump twice.

It's rather obvious why it didn't happen. It didn't happen because no military organization would obey an illegal order.

That isn't the point, kriman, the point is that the president had it drafted.

No normal non-putin loving president would have ever countenanced such a thing.

I'll accept that. Hell, I'll accept him running AND LOSING, just so he's never President again.
He and the Trumpers don't want that though. They want him President-For-Life.

OR you’re just making **** up as you go along and trump decided himself it wasn’t a good idea. Though he should have given the democrats shady ass actions.

But given the president has no control over the national guard... wtf is this story even about?

Go back and read the OP. He said
"Wow, this is really scary. This would have been a literal, illegal coup." I don't get scared of things that can't happen.

Additionally, given the democrat's track record on such things, I take it with a grain of salt.

That's the part I don't get with you folks. Everything he does is OK with you if he doesn't get indicted for it. It's fine that he sought to defraud the voters of the US by making illegal hush money payments to a porn star to keep his adulterous, sexual affair hidden from the voters. No indictment, no problem. 26 sexual assaults. No indictment, no problem. Obstructing Mueller's investigation. No indictment, no problem.

Whether that EO was issued or not, the idea that people Trump picked to be around him even remotely considered something like this should shake every American to their core.

That is not what you fail to understand. We have heard nothing but what Trump has been guilty of for the last five or six years. None of this has been proved.

Just a note. Mueller said Trump did not obstruct his investigation.

The National Guard ordinarily operates that way but it CAN be under presidential control, when federalized.

    From Trump's draft Executive Order:
    (5) The Secretary of Defense may select by name or by unit federalization of appropriate National Guard support.

    As the USO explains:

    9. There are Three Different Ways National Guard Members Can Be Called into Service.

#1 Each states’ executive leader (typically the governor) can activate National Guard units.
In this case, the governor will serve as the commander-in-chief and the state will pay for the cost.

#2 The president can federalize the National Guard under Title 10 status.
In this case, the president will serve as the commander-in-chief, active-duty officers will command Guard forces and the federal government will pay the cost. This is what happened during Hurricane Katrina.

#3 The president can federalize the National Guard under Title 32 status.
In this case, each states’ governor will serve as the commander-in-chief (but will answer to the Chief of the National Guard Bureau) and the federal government will pay the cost.
