What does it mean that Kansas decided in favor of women's choice 59% to 41%

One thing it doesn't mean, of course, is that Kansas suddenly turned blue. So if that 59% doesn't necessarily mean democrats, it means that the women's right to chose has bi-partisan support.

My prediction: watch Republican try to run away from the topic of abortion from now to the mid-terms.

But this still gives Democrats some hope that, despite Biden's low ratings. And despite the loss of constitutional rights that women have suffered, the Supreme Court might have thrown them a lifeline. Not because Republicans will suddenly vote for Democrats, but because democrats will be energized to show up to the polls in November. And this is the main problem democrats have always had: energizing the base.

I remember when we laughed at Kansas because they didn't want to teach Evolution. They showed us! Especially in Florida, where books that teach children to not be racists, and to be tolerant of different gender identities, are banned. Where teachers can be sued for saying the word "gay" in the classroom, and private businesses are punished BECAUSE their managers exercise their right to free speech.

So Kansas is moving forward, and Florida is moving backwards. Ooooh... the envy!

What it does mean? It means the GOP conservatives will introduce an abortion ban bill in 2023.

Being pro-choice does not mean one is pro-abortion.

When it comes to midterms, the GOP will more than likely win the House in Congress, but not by much. In Kansas, the state legislature is controlled by the GOP. The state house has 86 Republicans to 39 Democrats. The state senate has 29 Republicans to 11 Democrats. The GOP just needs to flip one seat in the state senate to have 2/3 majority or supermajority, and already a supermajority in the state house.

Kansas is not exactly a bright red state. It has two major university regions and tends to elect democratic and republican governors. Kansas now...is more like what oklahoma was. Oklahoma is going more red.

Either way I'm not surprised ....having lived in Kansas before coming to OK.

But this is how it should be...the citizens of each state deciding on its social priorities and thus having control over its future.

The rights of the state should not out-weigh the rights of individual Americans. MAGA would crap their pants if the State they
lived in voted to outlaw guns - they would turn to the Supreme Court for a final ruling.

What it means is.....that it doesn't bode well for Republicans in swing states.

Abortion....the killing of human life...is not enshrined in our constitution. That was the whole point of the Supreme Court ruling.

The right to own firearms is.

Except that this creates more confusion. But then again, maybe Texas should start its own "immigration system" and not allow any "foreigners" into the state unless you go through our immigration system. Of course, foreigner means anyone not born in Texas of course. But that would mean many of the MAGA people would not have to do what they criticize immigrants for not doing and they too will try to do the same thing.

    Ain't life grand?

I believe the constitution prevents Texas from handling immigration issues...can't block people at state lines...can't controll the border to Mexico. That's noted as a federal issue.

What does it mean? First, don’t get stuck in the conventional wisdom concerning the midterms. The data took a tremendous turn two months ago so maybe the homework weary press will wake from their usual sleep walking mode albeit that’s likely too much to expect.

Second, the Democrats will run on the extremism of the current GOP. Abortion isn’t the only issue they’re out of touch with Americans. Every button that can be pressed will be pressed to illustrate how extreme GOP candidates are on basic rights. Essentially turning their culture war platform against them. Take an honest three steps back and that crystal clear play book is in full view.

The current GOP is too extreme.

    The ballot was confusing.

And no, Im not just quoting Futurama, for once.

"Explanatory statement. The Value Them Both Amendment would affirm there is no Kansas constitutional right to abortion or to require the government funding of abortion, and would reserve to the people of Kansas, through their elected state legislators, the right to pass laws to regulate abortion, including, but not limited to, in circumstances of pregnancy resulting from rape or incest, or when necessary to save the life of the mother.

A vote for the Value Them Both Amendment would affirm there is no Kansas constitutional right to abortion or to require the government funding of abortion, and would reserve to the people of Kansas, through their elected state legislators, the right to pass laws to regulate abortion.

A vote against the Value Them Both Amendment would make no changes to the constitution of the state of Kansas, and could restrict the people, through their elected state legislators, from regulating abortion by leaving in place the recently recognized right to abortion.

    Shall the following be adopted?

§ 22. Regulation of abortion. Because Kansans value both women and children, the constitution of the state of Kansas does not require government funding of abortion and does not create or secure a right to abortion. To the extent permitted by the constitution of the United States, the people, through their elected state representatives and state senators, may pass laws regarding abortion, including, but not limited to, laws that account for circumstances of pregnancy resulting from rape or incest, or circumstances of necessity to save the life of the mother.

    Yes____ or No_____"

It looks to me like a 'yes' vote means Kansans can vote to legalize abortion. But apparently 'no' was the pro-abortion choice?

Its confusing as hell, and most certainly deliberately so.

In what country? It sounds like you think it's okay for states to strip the 4th Amendment right to privacy from women of childbearing age. I'm not okay with that. The people of my state, or any state, have no right to know about my medical conditions, much less tell me what I can or can't do with my own body. I'm pretty sure that's the message that Kansas voters have delivered ... a good old fashioned "mind your own business" statement if ever there was one.

Owning an AR-15 isn't "enshrined in our constitution" either, but that doesn't mean it isn't covered by the 2nd Amendment.

I think it shows that SCOTUS were right to leave it to the people. Abortion won't be the issue the DNC thinks it will be in November if folks are allowed to make their own minds up.

the ambiguity and double negativity are a feature of most state constitutional amendments that i have seen on ballots.

the amendment would have allowed the legislature (not the people) to make abortion illegal in every case. it is necessary (from the standpoint of big government "conservatives ") because the kansas supreme court found that the kansas constitution recognizes a right to abortion and its underlying rights of privacy and autonomy.

    Abortion is removing a wart.
The right to own firearms is not the right to take several people with you when you commit suicide.

I think that's going to be well noted across the nation and will hurt the Republicans a LOT in November

It means the same thing it meant when Donald Trump got voted against even by Republicans in 2020. They didn't suddenly turn blue, they simply voted counter to the stereotypical way folks expected them to on something specific.

    Keep dreaming.

The SCOTUS gave the issue to the states, not Republicans. What this shows is the boogie man created by lefties does not exist when abortion is still made legal in a place like Kansas.

It means that Kansas citizens rejected the idea that abortion should be something regulated at their constitutional level. It appears they were far more comfortable allowing their state legislators to continue to write legislation through which abortion could be regulated.

Frankly, it isn't a measure of do more folks in KS approve of abortion, or not. It was about process, not the behavior.

Again, this isn't a state level decision. You know it. State constitutions are required to honor the federal constitution. Again, you know this. States are not allowed, and these decisions from the SCOTUS have addressed this issue time and again. States, are not allowed to change a federal right. Perhaps you should read Dobbs.

There was a debate for the district held by the Nads in NY... Of the three participants, not one of the candidates was able to or even tried to address any of the top 5 political concerns of the people of their district. It just shows how ridiculously out of touch democrats are.

Democrats have become the party of "I'm so rich, inflation doesn't bother me. Because I'm rich". You might not want to forget that part....

What forth amendment protection do you assert is associable to abortion? SCOTUS didn't recognize it, rejected it, in fact. But for you, its real? How, specifically, is the right to privacy being encroached on, in you opinion?

According to democrats, unborn children are a tax write off. And owning a firearm is a tax income event. You might want to get back on board with your own party.
