ISTM those who profess to be of some faith by which they live their lives in an active déclaration also tend to dismiss women as inferior to men. Think Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Amish Buddhist for example. The exception may be Quaker. Is the submission of women part of à religious convention?
The Abrahamic scriptures are explicitly misogynistic. Buddhism? Depends on the tradition. Quakers, Unitarians, etc. fare better, but they aren't immune. Hell, some of the most rabidly misogynistic crap I've ever seen has come from atheists on YouTube.
In general, I agree. Far in the past, men would protect women, mainly because they were physically weaker then men. The high fatality rate during childbirth added to that. I don't think they all viewed women as 'inferior' in the intellectual sense, though they most definitely existed, but there was much men were led to believe, that wasn't the actual fact.
I am not concerned with the past This is 2022 when women are still considered inferior by those of committed faith. But not by those of little or no faith. Why? Do women of faith need more protection? Are those of little or no faith care less about the safety of women? I would suggest à "no" for both questions. So far what seems to be the case is that those of committed faith are taught to assume mâle superiority. Why?
You failed to use the word 'some', since there are a greater number of 'committed faith' that do not treat women as inferior. And just to clarify, what do you consider 'inferior' to be? Perhaps that is where the issue is, because I don't think any male would survive using a statement like 'don't you bother your little head about that'.
But they do when the women come from the same communities. They detach themselves from the passage of time and pretend things are as they were 100 years ago. Look at the threads and posts in here. Those who are part of à committed faith are the ones objecting to abortion and call pregnant women names and are happy to diminish her life while never accepting that half that life is because of à man. I have suggested that à pregnancy is half his fault and I get zéro repliés. And there is zéro blame and shame. References to management are referred to in the masculine. Some are unerringly fascinated by women's physical issues, from rape to abortion. It goes on and on. I suggestcsome kind of religious répression going on that can secretly be expressed in places like this. I have seen this often in other discussion groups too I put it out there for discussion .
@Pixie I am not religious, so I really don’t have a dog in the fight, just an opinion. The extremists excepted, in general, I don’t think religious people think women are “inferior”. What I think is that religious people believe in different roles for men and women, both valued, both of equal importance. My two cents, FWIW.
@Seth Bullock posted exactly what I would have responded. Just because certain groups feel women are more capable in certain roles then men, and men better at certain roles, does not diminish the importance of either role. It is biology and science that physically, most men are more capable at physical things, and most women are better at organizing and domestic needs. Oh, and reproduction is still important, lol. To try and paint with a wide brush that organized religion oppresses women, shows an unfortunate leaning to believe that the minority represents the majority. There is a phrase you may have heard, which is quite true: The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.
Most religions are quite old, and they were written at least partly as a reflection of their time. In the old days, misogyny was more common. And so following faiths written during a more misogynistic time, results in those misogynistic values being promoted today. There are other factors at play though. Religion is tempered by secularism in the US and Europe. It is not in places like Afghanistan.
No, it's not even that complicated for the misogynists. They are protecting women from themselves hence it righteous.
Not from my perspective. But if it is, then Mother nature is in on the conspiracy. What's the alternative. Would you prefer a pedestal? All I know is that when my Wife takes it upon herself to make tuna salad for me, she is sacrificing and consecrating an invaluable portion of her own finite life for me. In my estimation, her act, though she doesn't carry the Priesthood authority of God, yet in so doing, she calls down a blessing on my head and to my heart as if she stood right by Gods side on my behalf. And I think, who am I that a Daughter of God should touch my heart and caress my soul. By what authority does she accomplish this miracle. Yet she does. And that is a teensy part of her. The intrinsic power of womanhood, sans official authority, is immense.
When examining religion you kind of need to be. Most of them were formed long ago, beliefs codified, made doctrine, and hard to change.
Sometimes, but from what I noticed, in countries where women are suppressed, it's not the men who are the most judgmental and intolerant, but rather it's the women themselves who are the most critical and even cruel towards woman who will not conform to the prevalent social norm. I attribute it to the insecurity stemming from the oppression. It seems any deviance from the status quo becomes a threat to them.
A bigger percentage of women than men are conformist and less interested in social upheaval. That would explain the above. But of course, that's just the average. There are plenty of women who are revolutionary.
In historically oppressed women in societies driven by religion women were the purveyors of evil. Look at Genesis for exam0le. Women are the source of the downfall of humanity the initial rébellion against god. Yet they are the sole guardians of life. Christianity and other faiths have never reconciled that women have the final control over life. And why men want to reclaim that via contrived male dominated legislation.
Gosh. I never realised à Tuna salad was a viable compétition to running à multinational company. That à tuna salad is à large part of her finite life. As if that is all she is capable of Do you realise how patronising your post is? Get back in the kitchen woman while I organise the world? You have a Journey to make sir. A long one. However you have proven what I have said. Religious people keep women chained to the kitchen sink and tell her she does à good job.
Women need protecting from themselves?? Double jeapordy designed and executed by men to make her feel guilty? Of what?
That's a word much like transphobic or homophobic. Anybody who does something or says something I don't like is one of these words. It's a way to protect yourself from criticism. Just claim everybody hates you. Misogyny is prejudice or hatred toward women. I'm not familiar with any religion that hates our holds prejudice toward women. So you'll have to be more specific on what you mean
You must be a woman because you are rather myopic toward the way religion controls men. Or you support it. Much of these controls have to do with procreation. This is why you see many religions completely ignore it out right ban same sex relationships.
Well my first thought WAS that your post was a joke but I didn't want to insult you...so I gave you the benefit of the doubt. I would be relieved if you told me it was a joke.
I think some men tend to be misogynists. That’s the only prerequisite. Religions reflect the culture. As an example some versions of the bible have become gender neutral. Likewhere they used to say “it is easier for a rich man to enter the kingdom…’ it now says “it is easier for a rich person to enter the kingdom …”
