So much for Biden making Ukraine the priority. Ukraine was told they would get new tanks some time next year. I guess things are changing quickly in Ukraine.

What's changed is a plan for a Spring offensive in May after the ground dries up and hardens. By that time we might be able to get M1A1s to Ukraine and their personnel trained. It's a tight schedule, for sure.

That would be better than mothballing them.

Well, we were going to build them new ones anyway, from what I've read, not give up any existing stock. But this is quicker either way.

Britain to send depleted uranium shells to Ukraine for Challenger 2 battle tanks

    Joe Barnes
Tue, March 21, 2023 at 12:00 PM CDT

Britain on Tuesday confirmed it would send depleted uranium tank rounds to Ukraine, sparking protests from Moscow.

Baroness Goldie, the defence minister, said the shells would be delivered for use with the squadron of Challenger 2 battle tanks promised to Kyiv.

“Such rounds are highly effective in defeating modern tanks and armoured vehicles,” she said in response to a parliamentary written question.

Big ouchies on the way for Muscovite armor.

Quicker is better and even our older M1A1s will be a major upgrade from Ukraine's ancient T-64s:

Ukraine's Soviet-era tanks are getting stuck in the mud, falling apart, and frequently won't even fire, tank force commander says

Unfortunately, I just read that the M1A1s won't get delivered until Fall, so a Spring offensive would include Ukraine's new Challenger 2 and Leopard 2 tanks but not the Abrams.

I just know what Putin will have in mind of all what has happened during this war. This war isn't going to be over anytime soon.

As you wish. The Chinese peacemaker pretense is not credible, given Chinese history.

It is how the world perceives China's actions today that matter. We all know history fades away.

The Abrams uses a jet engine to power it. It is a totally different tank than they are familiar with so my guess is US contractors will be maintaining the tanks. So why has the Pentagon changed its mind on sending brand new tanks? The priority as we have been told is Ukraine meaning they should get the first tanks that roll off the line. Something has changed. What?

    Oh My!

    https://www.politico.com/news/2023/01/26/us-sends-ukraine-advanced-abrams-tanks-00079648

Questions remain over the timeline of when the Abrams tanks can be delivered to Ukraine. The tanks are assembled in one place only — a government-owned, General Dynamics-operated plant in Lima, Ohio. That facility can produce 12 tanks per month, but the line is now full of new tank orders for Taiwan and Poland — orders it would be difficult and likely controversial to put on the backburner.

Earlier in the discussions something was said about some of the metal in the armor containing spent uranium I think it was. We were building some that would not contain that metal for Ukraine.

Exactly. The A2 has the classified armor which is why we weren't giving Ukraine those tanks and the A1's were thought to be too old and needed tons of maintenance so a special tank was to be built without the classified armor. Now the US has decided to send the old A1 tanks. So what is the rush now?

U.S. will speed transfer of Abrams tanks to Ukraine, Pentagon says
The new plan calls for refurbishing tank hulls already in the U.S. arsenal rather than procuring new vehicles, which had been expected to take up to two years.

There was never an official plan to send the A2. That was according to anonymous sources.
