ICE tailpipes spew a lot more than just CO2.

There is plenty of lithium, etc. for many years of mass production as fast as possible. Plus, recycling is cost effective today.

The USA has plenty of lithium for US EV manufacturing. There have been moves to build battery factories in the US in cooperation with CATL, the premier battery producer. That is Tesla's direction.

Although some EV manufacturers have not found good sources for batteries, the major players have done so.

CATL's new MP3 battery is lighter, has improved performance and charges faster. This is what will be in the Tesla Y refresh.

Don't forget that the number of new passenger cars sold has been decreasing significantly.

And, EVs sold in the US are increasing at a healthy rate.

But this is as good as it gets with lithium.
To make very niche cars for a narrow group of enthusiasts? Why?
the charge times will be slower the rate of discharge well be slower. When you replace lithium with a poor anode material it makes a poor battery. It's this the one that they are using manganese in?

A lithium-ion battery will have superior capacity.

But the vehicles function even ones 15 years old function better than electric vehicles. When they use all of their energy you can simply add more in mere moments. In effect they don't have range because the charge times are quick and the milage better and the fuel widely available.

LOL - MP3 batteries have lithium. But, they have other chemistry as well.

Love your pickup! Here, you're just saying whatever comes to mind.

what on Earth could improve lithium as an anode?
You're just repeating stuff you've read an articles without really understanding why it won't work.

Lithium is the best material for an anode. How is diluting it with different chemistry going to make it better?

Europe, China, Brazil, Australia, and even some Southeast Asian countries are a little ahead in the per capita usage of EVs. BMW saw the writing on the wall. US companies, other than Tesla, are behind the 8-ball. That said, Borg Warner, a major supplier of automobile parts to the Detroit big boys, just signed an exclusive 8-year battery distribution agreement with BYD (Chinese battery and auto manurfacturer) for their Blade battery.

    https://www.borgwarner.com/newsroom...-with-findreams-battery-for-lfp-battery-packs

Auburn Hills, Michigan, February 8, 2024 – BorgWarner Inc. (NYSE: BWA) today announced a strategic relationship agreement with FinDreams Battery, a subsidiary of BYD Company Limited. Under this agreement, BorgWarner will be the only non-OEM localized manufacturer, unaffiliated with FinDreams Battery, with rights to localize LFP battery packs for commercial vehicles utilizing FinDreams Battery blade cells in Europe, the Americas, and select regions of Asia Pacific. The duration of the agreement is 8 years.

But that has nothing to do with the topic at hand.

And "spew" is a gross exaggeration.

    The EV tide is ebbing.
Sobering Up? EU May Scrap Its Plans To Ban Internal Combustion Engines By 2035
    By P Gosselin on 10. March 2024

After vote in Brussels last Monday evening, a majority of the European Parliament favored a Commission proposal that would no longer automatically classify electric cars as climate-neutral vehicles.[IMG]

    Image cropped here.

In the proposal, the CO2 emissions of electric cars would depend on the electricity mix used to charge the car, meaning electric cars would not necessarily be classified as “electric only”.

The EU plans to reassess the phase-out of combustion engines, based on the latest data and developments.

So what has brought on this sudden episode of political sobriety in Brussels? Probably a good dose of reality. Here are 4 possible reasons behind the EU’s new position:

    1. China

The automotive industry and many EU states warn of the economic and social consequences of a ban on combustion engines.

Electric car production in Europe cannot compete with the far lower costs in China. Europe’s car production would move overseas, and thus result hundreds of thousands of lost jobs – and lots of social unrest.

Currently Europe is already gripped by social unrest as farmers and truckers protest in the streets against radical green policies.

    2. E-car emissions cheating

Currently, electric cars in the EU are given a CO2 emission rating of zero grams! This zero emissions claim is a lie in most cases as the calculation doesn’t take true electricity generation mix into account. Fossil fuels are still widely used in Europe to produce the electric power.

A true accounting would include the CO2 emissions of the electricity used to charge electric cars and make them look less attractive.

    3. Climate-neutral fuels (e-fuels):

Efforts are being made to run combustion engines on climate-neutral fuels (e-fuels), which are produced from renewable energies and are thus CO2-neutral.

The EU Commission wants to examine whether newly registered vehicles with combustion engines that run on e-fuels can be registered from 2035. This would effectively suspend the ban on combustion engines, as e-fuels can be used emissions-free in practice.

    4. The 2024 European Parliament election

It is scheduled to be held on 6 to 9 June 2024. So now is not the time to upset voters with unpopular legislation. The Brussels bureaucrats probably just want citizens to think they are being pragmatic and will not take a radical course after all.

In summary, the EU may be realizing that banning internal combustion engines, and replacing them with e-cars, is going to cause a lot more damage than good.

This is a misconception. CO2 is certainly not the only emissions that have an impact on populations.

Also, in the USA, laws like charging EVs for fossil fuel percentages is ridiculous, as many charge at home with solar and the grid in various states has significant variation in cleanliness.
This is about Europe, not China.

As for EU, I don't believe that laws about 2035 are what is collapsing their car industry today.
There is a significant difference between burning fossil fuel on our city streets and a fossil fuel power plant, with mitigations and siting guidelines.

And, CO2 is certainly not the only detrimental chemistry emitted from ICE tailpipes.
One of the problems with ICE engines is that they don't burn completely. The fuel being "clean" is not proof that the exhaust is clean.

Hydrogen itself is clean, but most hydrogen comes from applying large amounts of heat to fossil fuels. And, as a fuel for transportation it is hugely expensive as has been shown.

So, this section is a hand wave unless the author can actually identify what is being proposed.
Yes. This is a political promotion.

I don't accept this last paragraph other than that their automotive manufacturing industry is sagging, as they are coming late to the party. This is how free enterprise capitalism works.

Tesla was on the cover of Time magazine in 2006 as best inventions in transportation.

    That's nearly 20 years ago.

Trying to make EVs more expensive is not going to save legacy auto manufacturers.

EVs are cheaper to own, cheaper to fuel, not polluting in our cities, quiet, fun to drive. And, electricity is becoming cleaner as fossil fuels are expensive compared to wind and solar.

    Like what? And how much?

You do know that EPA has regulated actual exhaust pollutants since 1970, right?

So surely you can quantify your claims by simply looking up what current standards are. Then you can compare them to what they were when the enviro-nazis dreamed up that tired "cars are killing everybody" trope 30 years ago.

It just might even help your cause. Now, I actually know the answer, so I doubt it will.

    But you never know.

Power stations can work far more efficiently than using cracking plants to make gasoline and then burning the gasoline in ICE vehicles. ICE vehicles are majorly inefficient, because of the number of moving parts and systems required.

Power stations have a greater choice of fuel. For example, they are moving to cheaper sources - wind and solar. Plus they can use natural gas if they need to use fossil fuel for some reason.

Power plants wisely use fuels other than oil.

OK, this is a start. However, we're not looking for the scary boogeyman "social cost" stuff produced by economist's guesswork meant to confuse the issue. We're looking for what's actually tangible in the real world- the percentage of exhaust gas that is each of those components.

Here's a hint: slightly better than 30% of exhaust gas from any engine is CO2, a nonpollutant. Another 30% is H2O, yet another nonpollutant. And finally, 40% is Nitrogen, another nonpollutant that also happens to be 78% of the planet's atmosphere.

We're looking for something like mass for the others. Again, EPA's website could help since they set the limits for engines.

Volvo will probably be the next car company to go total EV.

    https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a41897699/volvo-ex90-ev-revealed/

Volvo boasts that its current lineup is fully electrified, meaning that every car's powertrain—including the gas-engine ones—has at least some battery-electric component. The brand's stated goal, however, is to go much further and sell only battery-electric EVs—and no gas-powered cars—starting in 2030.

Your link is almost a year old. Meanwhile:
Volvo Cars has announced a strategic shift, deciding to cease funding for Polestar Automotive Holding, the luxury car brand in which it holds a substantial stake. Instead, control for Polestar will be transferred to China's Geely Holding, Volvo's top shareholder.Feb 5, 2024

Volvo shifts focus as it halts funding for Polestar, hands control ...

You can't section off the atmosphere this way.

Also making electric cars will do little if anything for cities because the primary producer of love pollution caused by vehicle traffic is caused by trucks.

There are no real electric trucks and they're probably never will be.

And the recommendation I'm going to give people las a mechanic never buy a Volvo. If you want a practical car buy a Toyota or Honda. If you want to go bankrupt repairing the piece of crap or paying for a rental while it's in the shop buy a Volvo.

Back when they're in actual swedish car they did pretty well but now that they're Chinese garbage you'd have to pay me to take one.
