Then FAMILY, YOU, should support her until she finds a job. You might even HELP her find a job if you were supporting her.

I'll be 50 next April, I have worked since I was 13. I have bad knees, two partially herniated discs in my cervical spine and a blown out lower back. My left hand is stuck in what is called "tapers hand" from 4 years of drywall finishing. yet I put in 60 to 75 hours a week driving truck. I live in constant pain, yet I have never even considered applying for disability. Government programs such as unemployment, welfare, etc. were never designed to be more than stop gap measures, and over the years I have been forced to avail myself of most of them. But only until I was able to find another job. Some were menial, such as working a few hours throwing 50 lb bags of feed for a couple of days or cleaning out hog barns. There is always a way to make a living. It may not be what you want, but that doesn't matter. you take what you can get. I was taught that no job is beneath you.

I feel for your sister. I really do. I remember when my sister moved back home, she didn't have a job at that stage and wanted some money to help her out. Centrelink was going to refuse to give her anything because they said that because she lived at home (at the age of 23), mum could take care of her.
Thankfully, she has a full time job now.

I hope your sister is able to come off welfare some day. I wish her all the best - and you are right, no one would want to be on welfare. It isn't easy at all. There is a lot of paperwork to be competed before you can even get those payments. Its not worth it.

He shouldn't have to support her. He likely has his OWN family to support, a wife and kids. Perhaps he can't afford to make his finances stretch that far?

I bet she has a good reason for not working. Many people on welfare can't work, anyway.

What if you had to do it every week? Would you be all over it then?

Bloody hell. Poor girl! :( Can she afford to have surgery to put a stop to it?

You are not a woman. I hate it when men assume something about women when really they don't have a clue.

The OP says the 22 year old is in college. He probably spends all his time studying because he wants a decent job.

I am willing to bet that everyone on foodstamps is there due to their own fault. There is either 1 or many decisions that has led them to their current situation.

Are you saying that the government should subsidize cost of living to the point that employers have to coax people into the job market? You are funny.

    Ugh...

50+ bucks an hour to navigate the touch-tone system. Disgusting rationalizations that she cannot improve her situation. Not only does her sense of entitlement require this money, and more, the person who ends up on the other end of the phone with this train wreck has to be paid... and it should be easier and faster.

    This isn't rocket science.

Adult diaper and fabreze. Get a job.

Or just take her to the zoo and watch the bears and big cats get excited. This is the most ludicrous thread I have ever seen here.

That has nothing to do with how "hard" it is to get welfare. Does she have a family of four? I heard mom and son.

You know... they base the amount you get on several factors... you are arguing, as I said, that she should do less, and get more.

That is a weeks wages for a minimum wage employee. Think about that. Plus they usually have bills that outweigh groceries. Why can't she work again?

My mother lives there too, that's 2 sons one 22 the other 14. My mother makes minimum wage and Social Security. She comes real close to disqualifying them for food stamps due to her income. But even with her income they can't afford to pay all the bills without my help.

She lives with her mom, has two kids 8 yrs apart (same father no doubt), no man in the picture. The 22 yr old son lives with grandma, mom, and brother, and has never held a job.

Yes. I should pay for that. I should lobby to see she gets more, and doesn't have to push so many buttons to get it, because clearly she makes sound life decisions... and it is not her fault she doesn't have the common sense to wear a diaper.

So instead she should go homeless and they should die of starvation and/or disease instead of collecting welfare? Because that is the only other option.

I bet Grandma would be all right on her own without two adult babies and a 14 year old kid to provide for on her social security, and oh... wow... she manages to have a job.

    Shameless. The entire thread.

Very dark indeed. It takes the average CEO over a full minute to make what this lady needs to eat for a month! The same CEO takes about 18 minutes worth of salary to achieve what this lady gets money wise to eat for a year! He drinks a cup of coffee, and viola! A years supply of food!

Boy....that poor CEO's plate and all. I feel really bad.

Yes, that is exactly what she should do. Some people just don't care. I hope she gets help for her condition and that she's able to work again.

As long as I spent less than 5 or 6 total hours a month, I'd be happy to do so. I only work for $40 an hour or more, unless I'm donating my time for charity. Even so, I have more work than I can handle. I'm even considering using some vacation time to get a few of the bigger projects off my backlog.

Decent people in this country are truly suffering. Jobs are really hard to get.
Some people are deserving of help. If your sister is one of those, she has my sincere sympathy.

Anyone who has ever tried to get a govt agency or business on the phone and had to try over and over knows this frustration.

Heck, the other day I was calling a Wal-mart looking for MW3 Hardened Edition, for my son's birthday and got hung up on 3 x before I got to the dept.
I called Best Buy and it took a half hour of constant calling to get someone to answer. I called a Gamestop almost constantly for 2 hours and got nothing but a busy signal. I'm still trying to get a copy of the game.
And that's private business. The govt is not easy to deal with. No sirree.

Last year we were trying to get a proper death certificate on my mother in law and it took months. They kept screwing it up. It was very frustrating.

Why is she waiting for someone to give her work? With the skills you say she has, she could be running her own website, getting paid for click throughs, selling stuff for drop shippers, selling stuff on EBay, advertising her design services. I know web designers and if she's any good she could have a website up and running in the time it took to get through the foodstamps run around.

Do you actually follow your own advice. It isn't all that easy to make money on the web as you seem to think it does. She does advertise her design services. She does have a web site. She doesn't get click throughs but she doesn't have enough traffic to warrant setting up a click through program.
