Looks like fb has lawyers ready to sue employers themselves over them using fb to snoop for personal info. I been saying for years fb should not be used to hire or not hire. Anybody else seen this on the news and internet?

    Link?

I think anyone who gives an employer the password to anything personal is frankly ignorant.

If my employer asked me for that, I would refuse and start looking for a position in another company and leave as soon as possible. If a prospective employer asked me for this, I would leave the interview.

Anyone who asks to see any personal information (and no - credit reports don't count) is not someone you ever want to work for. These are people who have an undeveloped understanding of ethics.

Someone needs FB to tell them not to give an employer their password?

I have heard about this, and its disgraceful. No employer has the right to snoop around your personal Facebook - what if they remember your password and access your account whenever they please? What id you change your password and they demand to know it so they can 'keep an eye' on things?

Employers need to mind their own business.

I know right. lol. But it seems like employers were forcing the issue and now with fb making this public it just makes it official instead of a personal choice. It's ILLEGAL and UNETHICAL what employers have been doing and there will be consequences in the future anf I wonder if for past occurences. I bet there will be lawsuites and also people will just not work for these places and it will take a few going out of business before the others step in line. They didn't see themselves as being inappropriate by snooping on fb pages.

A lot of people even in 2012 don't understand how the internet works. They honestly didn't know they were being unethical and opened themselves up to liability. BUT THEY DID!!! So I have no problem with what money they have to pay out.

This is why business LOOOVES high unemployment!

There are always more desperate people who have to degrade themselves to survive.

And companies and our wealthy are just itching to get rid of unemployment and food stamps!! Just THINK of what they could make prospective and current employees do to avoid destitution! :psychoitc:

that's exploitation and may be the reason there may be lawsuits going back a few years.

I'd ask them if they would be willing to give me the passwords to their own facebook accounts, their bank accounts, their server administrator's passwords, etc., before refusing. After all, I wouldn't want to be associated with a disreputable company, and I need to check to make sure that the company was adequately representing itself.

if an employer demanded my password, I would say can you send that request on email.... then refuse to give it to them, if they fired me, I would sue

On what grounds? If you live in an at-will state, you have no right to do so.

I guess people aren't understanding that it's a federal offense to ask or force you to give up your password. You probably wouldn't get your job back but you would get PAID and the company would be deamed not repitable. This internet stuff is so new ( only like 16 years really) that most of us aren't understanding the dynamics.

The federal government very, very rarely actually enforces labor laws anymore except in relation to wages. It requires some really, truly egregious actions by employers to prompt the feds to act. Or, you know, a gay person getting fired.

The chances of you getting anything from such a suit are very low in an at-will state. It would have to go through state courts, which would provide you nothing.

There are some weak people out there. I think drug/medical testing for a lot of jobs is in the same category. It's an invasion of privacy. I've done one drug test and medical for a job I didn't even get and its the last one Ill do unless I decide to join the army or something similar.

A friend that just joined the police department said they use it to see who you know and check your friends list for criminals.
They also use it to check your photos and activity. You have to open it up and watch them go through your page.

They are going to get sued for that with this new bill. Also I wonder if they can go back. People don't have to do that.
