I hear this statistic passed around a lot (exclusively by the right), and I just want to know how liberals can possibly get majorities in government over conservatives (and get a so-called liberal President elected in a HUGE margin) if conservatives really outnumber liberals by 20%.

People that don't participate in elections. USA has a participation lower than 50% :) And probably many people of that 40% are leftist.

But let's remember that liberals are just center-right.

Very simple answer to this. The majority doesn't vote. If it did, the republicans would never hold office again. The right wing defend the super rich, and their numbers are clearly not the majority. The left opposes the right, and represents the majority of the populous. Right wingers do things like purging voters in democratic districts, and have allies doing things like they did for George in 2000. (showing republican voters that actually voted for Bush in numbers that exceeded the actual population of an entire district. Somehow in 2000, Ohio had places the showed 5000 votes for Bush, yet only 2000 register voters actually existed in the country. Stuff like that.
Fact is, if the entire population voted, every election, every time, the right wing would be defunct.

    A. Math isn't your strong point.
    B. Dead people, foreign antionals voting, and people voting repeatedly have to be calculated somehow.

But, for once I'd agree with Fraud. A lot of nominal liberals are too irresponsi8ble and uninvolved to bother voting. Recently, a liberal suggested voting be mandatory. But, wait, that would mean they would have to show IDs. Can't have that.

Politics. When the issues at the center are bread and butter, Republicans wins. Republicans, however, aren't as good at playing the public. The "Buffet Rule" is a sideshow, wouldn't pull in any signifigant revenues, and only corrects a "unfair" tax that seems so unfair because the reality isn't portrayed.

Just keep this 40-20 figure in mind when people tell you that one party is "out of touch" or "extreme."

I think it's democrats that are center-right, and republicans far-right, and that means that liberals end up having to vote for democrats. But that doesn't make liberals center-right. You just have to remember that democrats aren't liberals, for the most part.

Exactly. Not even most Democrats are liberals because liberals want to attach bells and whistles to the ears of smart people and hopefully distract them to where they'll be of only equal ability as everyone else. They want to forcefully lower the abilities of people that have inborn advantages such as high intelligence and high motivation and high physical attractiveness.

As a liberal, you should know this.

I think that's a pretty good question. I think the answer has to do with cons painting liberals as gay or soft on this, that, or the other, and people prefering to see themselves as hard guys.

I dunno, I've got enough hair on my back to weave a horse blanket. Maybe because of that I'm not too worried about people calling me liberal.

Well, I think what some people forget is that about half of the Democratic party is moderate. Blue Dog Democrats tend to be socially conservative or socially moderate. They often still lean left in economics, but overall, they have a lot of moderate appeal.

Republicans have become increasingly conservative, so they are starting to gut some of their moderate support. This will definitely hurt them in the long run if they're not careful.

The word "liberal" has been somewhat demonized, and "conservative" is something a lot of people self-identity with, even if they don't necessarily lean conservative on every policy.

Yeah....Republicans might only carry 49 states if they nominate a real conservative.......

....but its going to hurt them in the long run.....no really......Moderates/Losers like John McCain are the future.

There is no meaning left in either of those terms.

Btw, the other 40% are known as "smart" people.
