It's funny;

I have been posting my personal cell phone number, email address, and family photo website on the internet for many years, on a great number of web forums.
(I am a moderator on a few of them, one of them a guitar player's website, and another an aviator's web forum.)

There has never been a down-side to it.
The only people who ever called or emailed me (and there have been precious few) turned out to be genuinely nice people.
I have even met of few of them in person, and hoisted beers with them.

Most people just prefer anonymity I imagine.
Secrecy.
Mystery.
Allure.
An illusion of something that may or may not exist in real life.

That's not my thing, admittedly.

The truth means too much to me I guess.

Dude I pissed off someone on another political forum. Somehow he got my email address and used it in the Reply-To of a mass mailing for penis enlargement kits. I got 1500 - 3000 "no such email address" per day in my in box for several weeks.

It think it is simply that people love to build their internet personae nice and large and fluffy, and they are fearful of anybody who speaks plain truths, and does not choose to hide behind fanciful internet affectations.
