    Well?

I play the guitar regularly, and the bass every once in a while. I have written some of my own material, however not being in a band (and being in an area with few people) its easier to do covers.

My most recent conquest was Tool's Lateralus.

Used to be. I guess I still am to some degree, I'm just not serious about it anymore.

I was in a thrash band back in high school and a black metal band in my early 20s. Then I took a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG break. And now I rap in my free time. Yes, conservative white boy metal guy raps.

Guitarist here too. I play nylon string, and on the electric I play what is basically neo-classical without the gain. My own stuff sounds like an insulting attempt to sound like violin compositions by Bach, Vivaldi, or Paganini.

As I am without the slightest amount of musical talent, I really do envy those of you that have that ability. My wife says that I couldn't carry a tune if I had a basket and two people to help me carry it.

Guitar here. Played a lot 30 yrs ago. We had a 25 year reunion for our band 6 years ago. The other day I got a call from one of the guys and he said Bass player would be in from DC area and drummer was flying in from Texas so could we get together again for a set some where Labor Day weekend. I guess it's not going to work. Maybe another time... It would have been great..Classic rock: Skynyrd, Eagles, Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker, Dickey Betts, Doobie Brothers.......

I used to play bass and sing in a kind of heavy blues/rock/metal band (trio - me, guitarist and drummer), doing some of our own stuff (mostly my own stuff, in fact), plus some Sabbath, BOC, Zeppelin, AC/DC and other odd (sometimes very odd!) bits and pieces. That's going back a good few years now, though. I've played in a couple of other bands, but not for a long time - the hassle of doing it around having a job and young kids just got too much. I also play a bit of guitar and a little bit of drums (where my PC is I'm mostly surrounded by a drum kit and a few various guitars and amps - picking up a guitar is usually my first response when the forum dies on me!), and spent many years singing in amateur operettas and musicals (and doing associated concerts).

I still play and write stuff - one day I'll maybe get round to do something with it again!

Grand Funk Blew Led Zepplin Off The Stage

A little known fact. Led Zepplin was blown off the stage at the 1969 Atlanta Pop Festival held during the July 4th weekend. Grand Funk was the warm up band or preceding band for Led Zepplin. Not yet signed by any recording company, this new band had the crowd loving the music and rocking so hard that the Atlanta International Raceway stands began shaking hard enough to alert the Festival organizers. A structural engineer was called, fearing the stands would collapse entirely due to the enthusiastic crowd.

After playing a few sets, the manager of Led Zepplin. Richard Cole, approached Grand Funk's manager, Terry Knight and he demanded that GF they stop playing immediately and leave the stage. Knight refused and the physically larger Cole grabbed Knight by the throat demanding they leave. The plug was pulled. The crowd was in no mood to have Funk leave and became raucus, rowdy, and began throwing items and yelling obscenities. With the atmosphere the way it was, Led Zepplin never went on stage. (Found on YouTube history of Grand Funk).

Grand Funk went on to immediate stardom signing with Columbia Records later in 1969. Their first album, "On Time," went Gold. In 1970 they released their second album, "Grand Funk," (red album) which went Platinum. "Closer To Home," their 3rd album went Double Platinum.

In 1970, Grand Funk sold more albums than any other American band and in 1971, Grand Funk played their largest gig to date selling out at New York's Shea Stadium ...selling more tickets than The Beatles and in just 72 hours compared to weeks for The Beatles.

In 1972, Terry Knight sued the members of Grand Funk for 75 million dollars claiming ownership of the band's name and songs. It turns out Knight was giving the band 6% from all sales of single and albums. So each member was getting 2% of what they earned.

In late 1973, the single "We're An American Band," hit #1, the band's first. At one point it, "We're An American Band" was the top selling song worldwide with 1 million singles sold. It is often referred to as America's rock anthem and rightly so considering the title, lyrics. and overall power sound. In 1974, "The Loco-Motion," a power-redo of the Little Eva hit of 1962, sold 1 million singles. In 1975 GF released their 4th album, "All The Girls In The World Beware" with 2 singles spinning off: "Some Kind Of Wonderful" and "Bad Times." In 1976, Grand Funk broke up citing stress and personal issues. They reunited in 1996 for a benefit concert.

I"m a long time sax player myself. The sax led me to other instruments. I also play some harmonica, electronic keyboard, drums, guitar, and I can play flute, clarinet, and piccolo in that I can play and know the fingerings.

My all-time favorite song is a simple little diddy by Redbone, called "Come and get your love". I can drop a killer sax solo on that song. It would go number 1 on the charts if i ever do it and record it.

I play piano and guitar. Classically trained on both...and I'm happy about that. Being able to read music and knowing music theory is vital.

Do you post any of your stuff online? I think we should all post some of our stuff online. Music brings people together.

Hardcore headbanging Heavy Metal rhythm guitarist since the 80's. Studied Classical and Blues... the foundation of early Metal. I use to be heavy into pentatonic, but over the years I have drifted towards the pure minor and messing with alternative tunings. I only play original music, never got into covers. Sadly because of my disability, my hand strength and shaking make it hard to play now days... but still do from time to time. I have a youtube vid up of me playing, but I do not think I would post it here... made too many enemies here and I use my real name on my youtube site.

    Ouch! That's harsh (-:

I always tell people that there are two basic types of musicians... those who are naturally gifted and effortlessly amazing (not me), and those who practice for ridiculously long periods of time just to be good (me).

Not vital. I've played for over fifty years, and don't read music. Music is a heart and soul thing for me.

Guitar here too...a little fiddle and mandolin thrown in for good measure. I'm a Jazz guitarist; but primarily play Avant-Garde, Free Form, Gypsy Jazz, etc. I really get most of my inspiration from horn players though. I harken back to a quote from some musician I heard a long time ago who said something to the effect of, "I'm really a horn player at heart...I just play on a really @#$%^& up axe."

I agree. For some classical pieces reading music and knowing theory come in very handy. However, it's not imperative. As a Jazz guy myself, I didn't even learn to read sheet music until some 15 years after I started playing...it's more about feeling, timing, and improvisation which don't require some vast knowledge of theory to function.

I Have always sung songs going back to when I was five. At one time I could have sung over two hundred different songs from memory. I lot of it's Christian stuff but then, back in the seventies, I could have done about 80% of the beatles song, almost everything By PP&M, and the Kingston trio plus a few of Kenny Rodgers songs from back in the days before he went country. I've now got about half an albums worth of unpublished Christian music, unfortunately I lack the skill move more than the lyrics from my heart where they currently reside onto paper.

I also agree, although it depends on what you are playing, of course. If you are doing 'classical' music, reading is obviously essential (and I've sung alot of operetta in particular, so I do read music). However, although a good working understanding of theory is essential to play any kind of music at a high level, that doesn't have to be 'formal' knowledge of written music particularly, but only needs to be a more general understanding of keys, rhythm, harmony, etc., because you aren't necessarily needing to play the music 'off the page'. It also depends to an extent on the instrument - playing piano requires you to actually know things like the actual sharps and flats of the keys to enable you to play, because of the layout of the instrument. On a guitar, it's not so critical, because you are dealing more with 'patterns' extending from the root note, and can apply that anywhere on the instrument without having to think about what a particular note actually is. Having said that, I'd obviously recommend learning to read music as a useful skill for anybody playing an instrument, as much as anything because it brings that general understanding of keys, rhythm, harmony, etc. along with it naturally - I read music when I'm singing, but I don't apply the reading itself to playing the guitar - I still have that general understanding of the principles, though.

I am going to be in a recording studio November 17th and 18th for a short demo.

I would like to do like six songs, my vocalist only wants to do three.

    Meh.

So add three intrumentals Some of the best stuff I've ever heard musically had no vocal accompaniment. Yeah I know it isn't real popular at the moment but someone needs to bring it back. It might as well be you.
