For those who don't know "Ebonics" is a term for 'urban/black slang', such as what you'd hear on any Lil' Wayne album.

In a nutshell, this school district in California wants to classify "Ebonics" as a official dialect, because this way urban youth struggling in school won't be penalized for not knowing 'proper English' - if a student submits his essay in "Ebonics", then instead of being penalized for not learning proper English - he'll just be given a passing grade since the school system recognizes Ebonics as an official language.

The dumbing down of America, folks. Great way to prepare young people for getting a job once they graduate - when they submit

This is what the progressives want for this country. If minorities are struggling in school, let's just dumb down the standards so we can give them a passing grade instead of encourage them to study harder.

Icing on the cake - they also proposed salary increases for teachers "proficient in Ebonics", as well as use of public funds to help teachers learn Ebonics. Only in California.

    ---

The Oakland, California school board passed a controversial resolution recognizing the legitimacy of "Ebonics"—what mainstream linguists more often term African-American Vernacular English—as a language.

For students whose primary dialect was "Ebonics", the Oakland resolution mandated some instruction in that dialect, both for "maintaining the legitimacy and richness of such language... and to facilitate their acquisition and mastery of English language skills." This also included the proposed increase of salaries of those proficient in both "Ebonics" and Standard English to the level of those teaching LEP (limited English proficiency) students and the use of public funding to help teachers learn AAVE themselves.[1]

Isn't this old news? I mean like 90s old news. Anyway yeah I agree, it's not a language. May as well say Southern is a language. Speaking of which, here's a Southern language exam!:

Coming from California, this doesn't surprise me. You know it has to be a Liberal idea. What better way to keep Blacks down and dependent, than to encourage them to trash talk. Or not require them to learn good English. You can just guess their chance of some company hiring them when they can't speak plain English.

Considering we have to consider "y'all" and other southern mispronunciations of the English language., I say hey...why not Ebonics too.

Bill Cosby said, according to Leiby: “Ladies and gentlemen, the lower economic people are not holding up their end in this deal. These people are not parenting. They are buying things for kids – $500 sneakers for what? And won’t spend $200 for ‘Hooked on Phonics.’

He added: “They’re standing on the corner and they can’t speak English. I can’t even talk the way these people talk: ‘Why you ain’t,’ ‘Where you is’ … And I blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk. And then I heard the father talk. … Everybody knows it’s important to speak English except these knuckleheads. … You can’t be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth!”

Sure they have that Southern slang, but you don't hear people say, hay lets teach it in school and grade them when using it. This is just another STUPID liberal idea. Like passing kids who can't even read.

"Y'all" isn't officially recognized by any school district as an 'official dialect', so your point is moot.

All I know is I can't understand a sentence those pickup truck drivin' sheet kickers say. Seems moot also that if you can't speak the language, then you ought not criticize others for not wanting to speak it either. That's the point.

Yeah, and they'll probably call him an "Uncle Tom" for that. Though he's donated millions to help fund black education.

Where my family is from in Germany there is a dialect called Hamburger Plat. It's nothing like Hochdeutsch, the two languages are not mutually understandable.

During the Hitler years it was banned and severe penalties were issued. The last few decades it has made a come back and is being taught in schools.

The difference is, they don't encourage Southern kids to use it in school or grade them as being ok if they do. What is it with Liberals, do they want to make Blacks dependent on them for life by making them think they can't learn as well as everyone else? Just one more reason they can't get good paying jobs. Liberals really are crazy.

That's a dialect just like Ebonics is a dialect. We don't teach dialects.

    Yeah, another gem from California:

    http://www.aclu.org/blog/racial-justice/high-school-grad-cant-read-his-diploma

High School Grad Can't Read His Diploma
By Deuel Ross, Racial Justice Program at 5:34pm

This past December, “Casey A.” — like most seniors — was excited to receive his diploma from the high school at Challenger Memorial Youth Center in Lancaster, California. Challenger is operated by the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) for state wards housed in its youth probation camps. However, unlike most high school graduates, Casey is illiterate and his diploma perpetrates a cruel sham. Rather than being a symbol of Casey’s accomplishments, this diploma is one of the many tools LACOE is using to absolve itself of its legal responsibility to educate and rehabilitate Casey and the other 650 youths under its care.

A class-action lawsuit filed today on behalf of those youth housed at Challenger by the ACLU Racial Justice Program, ACLU of Southern California, and other legal groups seeks to hold LACOE accountable for its total failure to provide basic educational services. The federal lawsuit (PDF), filed in Los Angeles, charges that county personnel have acted to arbitrarily deny students their right to an education and due process under the federal and state constitutions. Rather than providing students with the skills needed to operate in the workforce, the suit alleges that administrators and teachers are simply not teaching. Instead, they have removed students from class to perform custodial tasks, ignored Casey’s and others’ pleas for remedial education, and capriciously punished students with seclusion.

Challenger represents an aspect of the School-to-Prison Pipeline, a phenomenon whereby youth, particularly youth of color, are ensnared in the criminal justice system early and then deprived of the resources necessary to escape. Without positive interventions, these youth will remain trapped in the juvenile and criminal justice pipeline.

Over 50 years ago, the Supreme Court wrote in Brown v. Board of Education that “it is doubtful that any child may reasonably be expected to succeed in life if he is denied the opportunity of an education.” States have a duty to ensure that our most vulnerable children, particularly those who are directly under its care, are prepared to successfully reintegrate into the mainstream. The failure of Challenger to teach its students to read will, for the rest of their lives, impede their efforts to become productive citizens.

Among other things, the lawsuit seeks to compel the county to provide intensive reading services to current and former students at Challenger; to mandate that Challenger is held to the same educational standards and provided with the same resources as other California public schools; and to prevent officials from excluding students from classrooms without providing them with a fair opportunity to challenge the basis for their removal.

This lawsuit aims to ensure that the next set of students to graduate from Challenger will be able to read their diplomas.

Except the best indicator of someone dropping out of high school isn't their race; it's their socioeconomic status.

Getting a job is tough for those who "no habla." Think it will be easier for those who only speak ebonics?

This is just a government policy that will further ghettoize blacks.

Standard English is a mode of assimilation.

Hochedeutsche and plat speakers can understand each other, but with difficulty. Plat speakers can usually decipher the lingo in the Netherlands.

Kinda like a Boston southie talking to a Louisiana Cajun. They can get by - - more or less.

You mean like my corn-fed rural students who toss out double negatives, ain't, and y'all with nearly every sentence? That sure ain't no standard English, y'all.

    Here's the most hilarious part:

"We'll pay you more money if you can talk like someone who's been repeatedly clubbed over the head with a 20lb blunt."

    Glad this never happened.

You can get by with "y'all, ain't," and double negatives. Nobody outside the ghetto understand ebonics at all. Maybe drug dealers.

Do you know why you can get along? Because our society is a "white" society economically, institutionally, and socially.

    Justify, coddle and reward illiteracy....
then blame and vilify racist whitey for their 40% youth unemployment rate.

All while demanding more "reparations" (welfare) from the same racist whitey
who refuses to accommodate this ignorance and illiteracy in their businesses.

    Quite a scam, progressives.

Language is knowledge and knowledge is power, and so it's very interesting to see just how insecure the Anglo-supremacists get when exposed to languages they do not know. It's unsettling to them. How dare you speak the language of your own creation, only stupid people don't know prissy, fancy lad English, right?
