    This time against veterans’ organizations.

    http://www.accountingtoday.com/news/IRS-Pressed-Explain-Audits-Veterans-Organizations-67950-1.html

    quote:
“…the IRS is now requiring American Legion posts to maintain dates of service and character of service records for all their members, with a penalty of $1,000 per day if they don’t comply. The American Legion only recently learned about a section of the 2011 Internal Revenue Manual pertaining to audits of veterans’ organizations.”

“What legal authority does the IRS have in carrying out a mandate for personal, military service records?”

Apparently the OP and the author of the article didn't read the article since the last paragraph explains why the records are collected. Besides what difference does it make? The government knows if your served or not already, how hard is it to provide a DD 214. I had to use mine to get my education benefits.

I think these quotes from the linked article show this might be another Britebart type right wing fabrication:

"The conservative news site, the Daily Caller, reported last week that the IRS is now requiring..."

"However, according to a report by a local Georgia news outlet, the Dalton Daily Citizen, leaders of two American Legion posts say they hadn’t ever heard about the issue before, nor been approached by the IRS to provide documentation of their members’ service records."

Who fined the Government for this?

The 1973 Fire, National Personnel Records Center

    Affected:

    Army - Personnel discharged November 1, 1912 to January 1, 1960 - 80% loss
Air Force - Personnel discharged September 25, 1947 to January 1, 1964 (with names alphabetically after Hubbard, James E.) - 75% loss

My Dad's records were never recovered. Comical the Government demanding record keeping, when they couldn't accomplish it themselves.

Without someone providing those records, calling them all potential terrorists just seems a bit crass, if the records are provided it only shows proof that potential terrorist veterans are organizing. We know how the game is played... :)

"The government already knows you exist, how hard is it to get a voter ID card ?"

Thanks. I'll use that from now on.

Looks like the Dalton legion posts need to read their own correspondence.

And the Daily Caller is vindicated.
