Everyone knows that rights and freedoms are an infernal invention of white demons from the West. Kinder, Küche, Kirche …eh Children, Mosque, Kitchen – that’s just what the doctor ordered for true believer Arab woman.
P.s. the debate about women’s rights to legally drive a car is a big progress for this region…. >
On March 11, 2002, a fire at a girls' school in Mecca, Saudi Arabia killed fifteen people, all young girls. The event was especially notable due to complaints that Saudi Arabia's "religious police" (aka the Committee for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice) stopped schoolgirls from leaving the burning building and hindered rescue workers because the girls were not wearing correct Islamic dress.[1] As Hanny Megally, Executive Director of the Middle East and North Africa division of Human Rights Watch put it, "Women and girls may have died unnecessarily because of extreme interpretations of the Islamic dress code. State authorities with direct and indirect responsibility for this tragedy must be held accountable."[2]

Sauer: Over 130 girls got out before the staircase collapsed.

The Mutaween didn't stop any girls from getting out.. They ran out of the school and down the alley to the main street before they ever showed up. There was no fire... just smoke and panic.

I got on the phone as soon as it happened and called several Arab Reporters that I knew.. Everyone repeats the same story.. Hanny Megally was in Cairo and hasen't worked to my knowledge since 2003.

The building was an old apt house.. it was overcrowded and had no modern safety features... So the girls education was moved to another ministry.. The Saudis were completely freaked out. I don't remember the names of those who were fired...

But 130 girls and teachers got out... The 14 that lost their lived died when the staircase collapsed.

    You can't always believe wiki.

I'm really not sure that it isn't SA women pushing to keep themselves in the Bronze Age. As we found out in Afgh., when women were freed to take off their burkhas, very few of them did. They may just WANT it that way. There's an entire political party in America trying to push us back to 1880. Something to do with values . . .

But there are many other sources except Wiki which prove it. This is a very scandalous and tragic episode. Where is any source that can disprove this information? Any link?

If it is the wrong information why Saudis did not bring a suit against newsmakers? Why they did not give any clear disproof?
Again - It’s not a sort of news about Britney Spears’ new bf. This is a very scandalous and tragic episode. Where is any source that can disprove this information?
Lol I’m not an eyewitness of this episode. But I think they use the same methods as other ppl who want to save their lives from the fire.

You might try some of the Arabic Newspapers.

    http://www.arabnews.com/node/219083

    I misremembered the numbers...

“It was a small fire. But seeing the billowing smoke, the girls got frightened and rushed together to get out of the building. The deaths and injuries were caused by the stampede,” Tuwaijeri told Arab News. He said that 12 of the injured girls have already left hospital after receiving treatment.

Dr. Ali Al-Murshid, head of the presidency, in his press statement did not mention the reason for the fire, but pledged that his department will investigate the incident.

A number of female teachers at the school told Arab News that the old building was not suitable for housing a school. They added that no teacher was among the injured.

An Arab News team which visited the school yesterday found a large number of abayas (black gowns), shoes and bags left by the girls in the rush to get out of the building following the fire. There were a total of 757 students at the time of the incident.

Firefighters reached at the school soon after receiving the news. Four firefighting units and three rescue teams took part in the rescue operation. The evacuation of the school took some 30 minutes, one civil defense official said.

Arab News found the staircase of the school building broken due to sudden rush of students and teachers. Parents have called for an investigation into the authorities’ failure to shift the school to a suitable building.

The way the news works in Saudi Arabia is very different from the way it works here. I believe it is extremely foolish to try to superimpose the belief values of the West onto the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. These are two cultures do not even start off from the same place and then they go in opposite directions. I have seen people spend years in Saudi Arabia and never even begin to fathom the first thing about the culture. When I was in the Middle East, I lived with an Arab family and we only spoke Arabic, and I learned a lot, but mostly I learned that I didn't know as much as a child knows about the culture.

For example, I thought the rules of modesty were an affront perpetrated by men at the expense of women. The truth is that the women in Middle Eastern countries are often the strongest advocates of extremely modest dress and Arab men, by and large, much like western men, would prefer more revealing attire. So why is this? Well, if you know the answer, then perhaps you are wise and knowledgable enough about the culture to offer commentary.

And one more thing, I find that Margot is the most knowledgable person on this entire forum about what is real or not real in Saudi Arabia. She has earned this reputation by providing keen insights and thoughtful analysis in the face of whithering and ignorant rebuttals. If she tells you that you are wrong about facts in the Middle East, then you should certainly make an effort to check your facts and truly investigate the sources you have been relying upon. In short, if you have actaully lived in the country, you would know that Margot is extremely perceptive about what happens there.
