Yes, but the Republicans should not count their chickens before they've hatched either.

Thanks for the welcome! Look forward to some posting work.

fdr's policies didn't do squat. They were the same as Hoover's, only
bigger, which put us into the Great Depression to begin with.

Like I said, WWII and NOT government programs, which didn't help at
all, created a depression in a depression by some historians.

Unemployment dropped some but by 1938 was was about 19% I don't
know where you're getting your charts but they aren't accurate. The
unemployment numbers fluctuated tremendously until WWII.

Another reply from a sensible post.

Did you notice that during fdr's administration that only the first 2 years
were single digit unemployment? The rest of the time it rose to double
digits and never left until WWII.

It requires a super-majority of 60 seats to effectively control the Senate and not just a majority.

What we also know from experience is that we never want the House, Senate, and Presidency to all be controlled by the same political party. Simply look at what happened in 2009 when the Democrats controlled all three as an example. The Republicans would be just as bad, perhaps worse, than the Democrats if they controlled both houses of Congress and the Presidency.

I don't care if a person is a Democrat, Republican, or Independent they should all oppose any party ever controlling both houses of Congress and the Presidency at the same time because it's BAD FOR AMERICA whenever this happens.

Unemployment was at 25% when FDR took office and had dropped to 14% just four years later. That's hardly what I would consider 'squat'.

WWII created a depression? Where do you get that idea? GDP grew all during WWII, which just happens to correspond with a massive increase in government spending. What do you think that $300B was used for?

If you think my charts are unemployment numbers, then you are not looking close enough.

Then shot back to 19% while his out of control spending was still chugging
    along.

Remember when conservatives pressured FDR to balance the budget in 1937? Look a little closer at the spending chart above and you'll see that federal spending actually dropped from 1936 to 1937, just before unemployment jumped back up in 1938. Not exactly what I would call 'out of control spending'.

One year of a little less spending is crucial? The rest of the graph
    paints the picture.

Yes, one year is crucial. After one year of reduced spending we had one year of increased unemployment. See the connection?

I get the connection. Less government spending curbs unemployment. Look
at 1940-41 when his policies came to an end.

At any rate, fdr's spending was out of control. One year of reason was good
but it isn't a true reflection of his presidency and the disaster he created.

You do remember what happened in 1941, don't you? And while New Deal programs may have ended then, government spending certainly didn't decrease.

There's no need to be insulting.
Yes they mercifully came to an end. Are you aware of what major
wars do for an economy? They stimulate it. Sad, I know, but that's
what happened. I don't condone a world war.

So FDR's $3B New Deal programs ended just as a $300B war began. I still don't see how you can make the argument that government spending doesn't stimulate the economy. Any spending, regardless of who does it, stimulates the economy because that is what drives companies to produce more.

Government spending doesn't stimulate the economy because it took
money out of the economy in the first place then put a smaller amount
(gov spending) back into it. This is tried and failed Keynesian Economics.

Cutting government spending, see years 36-37 stimulates the economy.

Remember the stimulus of W and this president? It didn't work, either.
Money can't be taken out of the economy and returned (gov spending)
at a lesser amount and expect to do any good.

Prunepicker, when was the last time in US history, that austerity and cutting Federal spending resulted in an economic boom?

That is exactly how I feel too. I am rooting for Grimes to win in Kentucky and for the Republicans to pick up 7 currently democratic held seats for a net gain of 6. I would love nothing better than for Reid and McConnell to be gone from their current positions. That would be the ideal results for me.

And GDP subsequently dropped from 1937 to 1938. Where exactly is this stimulus you speak of?

First of all the GDP isn't necessarily a good indicator of how the economy
is doing. It's hit or miss. That's why the Genuine Progress Indicator was
    created in the 90's.

Unemployment was down. Something had to happen and it wasn't anything
fdr did or it would have happened earlier in the depression.

Between 1937 and 1938, GDP decreased and unemployment increased, both indications of a bad economy. Which factors in the Genuine Progress Indicator show the stimulus you claim resulted from the spending cuts in 1936?

If it ever came to that, the Republicans winning the majority without McDonnell, I wonder who the Republicans would elect as their Senate leader, or better yet, who should they elect?

Yes they do. There's a lot of ground that needs to be retaken obamacare

It won't matter because the bills won't make it past the President's veto pen. However, it forces the Democrats to vote against them.
