Bin Laden, as he laid out in his 1996 declaration of Jihad, went to war against the US because the US stationed troops in Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War.

Well his declaration of Jihad was supposed to be a list of grievances, but yeah, ultimately, all grievances from radical Islam can be boiled down into the requirement for submission.
