Have you ever thought about the idea to get rid of those political liars? We are always speaking about changes. Is it a real time has come? The top level general idea is if a politician in congress has lied, demonstrably, either through ignorance, intent, or misdirection; they would be fined a significant amount of money, or whatever else politicians hold dear. Fining for lie means more truth and more money. Thoughts?
I'd love nothing more, but I doubt it would have an impact. Politicians' lies are always being exposed, and if that hasn't had an effect, a fine won't, either. Indeed, given the choice, I'd bet a politician would pay the fine rather than expose the lie.
We do. If they lie about something politically significant and it's demonstrably a lie, the press is all over it. And they loose some of the thing they love most ... votes. One problem is it's really hard to demonstrably differentiate between a lie, a changed opinion, and an honest mistake.
Yea, it should be up to the people to punish liars, not the system. Can you imagine if a president was forced to tell the truth all the time, they would be afraid to take any action which might get them in trouble. What if they were lying for some national security issue they did not want another country to know about? Basically we would need to disband all federal law enforcement agencies as well as the CIA and NSA. Our military leaders could never run another military operation because as soon as some junior reporter asked them a question they would have to tell the truth. Or the more likely scenario is that all top levels of government would simply stop talking. No more daily press briefings in the WH, no more access to any politician by the media, no more interviews by any government employee on Sunday mornings. It would be complete silence from our government so we would have absolutely no idea what they were doing. This is a dumb idea.
We could pay off the debt for every time they lie, which is almost every single time they open their mouths.
Depending on the size of the fine, you may be able to pay off the national debt, all 18 trillion in months.
Right now I can only think of when a Senator lied for a sitting President to help get him reelected. Harry Reid Relishes Romney Tax Lie: "He Didn't Win, Did He?" http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs...arry-reids-shady-romney-didnt-pay-taxes-ploy/
You realize of course, that it really wouldn't change anything don't you? Truth is a three edged sword. That is to say, everybody has their own conclusions what the truth is. You present one fact to a hundred people, well, why not make that ten thousand people, and you will have ten thousand interpretations of that fact, and every single person insisting that their interpretation can be the only valid truth.
If we fined liars in Congress we could wipe out the national debt!!! If we fined liars in the Executive branch we could pay it off twice as quick!!!
Obama promised during the campaign that he would put every bill on the WH website for 72 hours before he signed it. His first bill, some credit card bill, he signed without doing that. His very FIRST action was a lie. He would be fricken broke by now.
How do you like the system similar to the three-strikes used for many drug-offenders? Strike 1 = fine equal to 20% to total wealth. Strike 2 = 60% of total wealth. Strike 3 = All total wealth and summary execution (or at least permanent expulsion from any elected office). The government should fear the people and be terrified of misleading or lying to them.
Like I said, if you are going to punish politicians for lying they will simply start talking in terms where they never tell you anything. They will say things like, "I will try to do this or that if the circumstances allow me to but there are no guarantees." If you do not think politicians can easily avoid giving absolutes then you do not know our political system. There is no way you would ever catch a politician (except a bad one) in a lie.
Victimless crimes, or with victims? - - - Updated - - - How? How will politicians magically come up with money they don't have? Do you live in fantasy-land? Ever look at the net worth of our 535 members of congress and compare it to our debt?
