Therein lies the problem. We get these guys who have previous weapons convictions, but served relatively short sentences for them. It has been debated in other parts of this forum that mandatory sentences and 3 strikes you're out hasn't worked very well in the drug war. In other debates, part of the drop in crime over the past 20 or so years is attributed to longer sentences. The bad guys are contained. Generally, if a bad actor is locked up until he reaches the age of 45 or so, he's less likely to keep acting badly.
It seems to me that there are some things that society just has to tolerate, like supporting criminals in prison for long periods of time, because they can't be trusted with freedom.
We need to do a serious overhaul in the prison system. A whole bunch of people are still imprisoned for non-violent crimes; mostly drugs. They're absorbing resources that would better be dedicated to dealing with violent offenders.

There are already many types of speech that are illegal. Why not a few more?

You are aware that, should conservatives take the white house in the next election, your proposals could easily be turned against you, and you find yourself sent to prison for expressing your own views, correct?

Only a foolish individual believes that their proposals will never be turned against them at some point down the line.

Now that there is another tragedy to exploit, Manchin, Toomey both interested in reviving their gun control push.

I don't understand lawmakers. There is no law that would have prevented this shooting, but that doesn't stop them from wanting to make new laws.

The only other alternative is to lay blame on those they pander to for votes.

Lawmakers make laws because it makes them feel important. Face it, the only type of person that wants to be a politician are power junkies, those that want to tell people what they can and cannot do.

    Laws stop crime right?

I mean, murder is outlawed so of course people don't do it.

Alcohol was outlawed and that worked fine.

Drugs are against the law, and boy did that work. I mean it's not like drugs fuel violent crimes.

Gun free zones are complete sanctuaries that have never been violated. It's not like they'd be attacked as easy targets or anything.

I'm sure the police would also willingly give up their weapons, I mean why would they need them we have laws saying you can't do bad stuff.

The older I get the more I wonder what the hell is wrong with people's mental problem solving processes.

well to thinking people-gun control as crime control is pretty stupid. but if the purpose of gun control is to harass gun owners and to make the NRA spend money defending turf it has already won so it cannot spend as much money trying to get rid of gun banning politicians, gun control makes perfect sense and that is why almost all the proponents of gun control are leftwingers

    Ha! Meanwhile in Las Vegas...
I was talking to my land lady today. She wants me to teach her about defensive hand guns. She has 3 daughters, aged 12 to 16. She wants to bring them along for our training, so they can understand that guns are lethal, but something that a girl needs to know about.
Except for being so dastardly hot where I go shooting, it'll be a good time. I have a .22 pistol to get them started, and 3 different 10/.22's to amuse the girls while Mom learns about different sized Glocks.
This is how we fix the gun control system. Educate the girls!

    Amen brother.

Nothing is more powerful or inspirational than helping our spouses and children to be confident and unafraid by giving them the tools and knowledge they need to protect themselves and others.

I'm in the process of doing the exact same thing as you.

Richard Henry Lee said, "To preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of the people always possess arms, and be taught alike, especially when young, how to use them."

The most dangerous aspect of the progressive fear of guns is that they try and scare their children from even touching one. That is a recipe for disaster since kids are curious and often do what they want instead of what they are told. Keeping kids uneducated will get them killed.

You should tell him he's lucky to live in a such a progressive time. I almost caught a case for a switchblade in 07. Good thing they're legal now :)

We have a standing house rule. If I can't carry my gun, he can't carry his knife. It puts things in perspective for him and introduces him into the legal aspects of carrying a weapon, because the law coincides with my "house rule".

The funny thing is that my 21 year old in the military can't carry a switchblade.

Don't forget balisongs, which apparently make you look way too cool to be legal.

What gun control system? The young insane racist was more insane than racist. In other words whether he hated another race or not, the outcome would be the same.

Except in TX since September 2013. My 13 year old wants one, but I told him he had to get a dulled practice one to learn how to do it well first. We've already had 4 stitches in his finger a couple of years ago. That was enough.
