Don't forget that as bigly as these people seem to be losers, they have families who are devastated. I think the death toll is up to 24 and rising. I think that's what I read in the comments.

I own a building with a a sprinkler system covering part of it. It has not been tested as long as I have owned it; a woman who works for me who has worked there for the two previous owners (roughly 25 years) said as far as she knows it has never been tested; and the fire marshal who came through about a month ago never asked about it or inspected it. They just looked at the fire extinguishers to make sure they were charged and left.

Oakland has 4 code enforcement officers, which is significantly lower than is typical for a city this size. For a city and a state that spends so much money putting government into everyone's lives, it often under-funds those things that most have to do with safety.

    - - - Updated - - -

That's what politicians do. The place was a tinderbox and completely out of code, but they'll punish everyone else who doesn't perfectly meet building codes.

Taxes aren't lower in Oakland, and regulations are increasing. Oakland has a crappy government, for the most part.

I live 2 miles from where the fire occurred. If you know the area - and I drive through it frequently - you'd know that it's heavily Asian/Black/Hispanic. Because of the high cost of living here, some are seeking out places to stay that are unregulated and in very poor condition.

That being said, this seems to be a warehouse occupied by mostly by artists, so likely a mix of races and mostly young people.

No more surprising than you blaming it businesses wanting lower taxes and regulations. You're just as much a hack as they are.

That's just an "artistic" assemblage of some statuary. If it was a cult, they'd have better facilities.

They f-ed up. It's simple, this area has tremendous struggles with anything like housing that's affordable. I have a home two miles from that warehouse and the rent I pay would probably make you choke unless you live in my area.

So, now we have these live-work spaces popping up that aren't up to code, and probably not even official by any stretch of the imagination.

They shouldn't have thrown a party. A few people could have made it out. 50 or 60 people in an upstairs area that probably isn't even made to hold that is a disaster waiting to happen.

They'll blame the owner. They'll blame the city. You know who I think deserves partial blame? Everyone of those people who have pushed for limiting development in the Bay Area in the 90's and early 2000's thus creating this massive housing nightmare.

50 people in a building that large does not constitute "assembly"

This is why we have building codes though.

Actually, an appropriate time to evaluate building codes is upon issuance of an occupancy permit.

It also sounds like the building was home to numerous Building Maintenance Code violations and a history of construction projects without required permits. Permits which force the issue of building code compliance.

I am not making this political, but there is a reason why building codes and design professionals should be involved.

Blaming government man power because people didn't follow the rules doesn't make much sense.

That would be like blaming the police because somebody drove over the speed limit.

People are not going to follow the rules, and as a result people are going to get hurt. Just the way it is.

You can't judge people by their outward appearance, lifestyle or decor where they live....so says Liberals. 😄

Most logical people would look at all this and wonder how it hasn't happened sooner.

You do know that the city is paid an awesome fee for permits to correct code violations so the cost would be off set as much as twice by the fees?? I expect that the person responsible for inspection that building knew that it was infested with perverts and artists and most likely got an awesome cut of the action.

Oakland warehouse fire death toll rises to 36; number expected to grow

The search for victims of a deadly fire that engulfed a warehouse in Oakland, Calif., entered its third day Monday as the death toll grew to 36.

Investigators said during a news conference that they expected the number to rise; however, recovery efforts were halted due to unstable conditions inside the building. So far, about 70 percent of the warehouse has been searched.

“We absolutely believe the number of fire fatalities will increase,” Oakland Fire Battalion Chief Melinda Drayton said.

“My Administration is in close contact with our state and local partners on the ground to make sure that authorities have everything they need as they continue response operations and investigate the cause of the fire. Oakland is one of the most diverse and creative cities in our country, and as families and residents pull together in the wake of this awful tragedy, they will have the unwavering support of the American people,” President Obama said in a statement Monday.

So the death toll is now up to 36 and all the city agencies are pointing fingers at each other. But of course obama is happy that the Oakland fire department has a black woman chief. Evidently she did a marvelous job here.

On ABC news they showed a picture of the staircase in question before the fire. There was a painting of a woman who seemed to be engulfed in smoke hanging above that stair case. Really creepy IMHO.

Oakland's 'Ghost Ship' was a death trap...
    :omg:
Former tenant: Run-down Oakland warehouse was a 'death trap'
December 5, 2016 — Shelley Mack says she didn't know the converted Oakland warehouse known as the "Ghost Ship" was an illegal residence until after she moved in, when she was instructed to tell visitors it was a 24-hour workspace for artists.

They are probably going to wait until they determine the cause of the fire and then convene a grand jury. Just a guess.....
