5-year-old girl suspended for playing with ‘stick gun’ at recess

Caitlin Miller’s teachers took her to the principal’s office on Friday and the 5-year-old did not understand why.

She had been playing with her best friends during recess at her Raeford, N.C., school playground, just like any other day. She pretended that her two friends were a king and queen, and that she was in charge of protecting the kingdom. “I was the guard,” Caitlin told WTVD.

Noticing a stick shaped like a gun on the ground, Caitlin picked it up and pretended to shoot intruders entering the kingdom.

But by playing with this stick, her school administrators said, Caitlin was violating school policies.

The 5-year-old was suspended for one day for “turning a stick into a gun and threatening to shoot and kill other students,” the elementary school’s assistant principal wrote in a note to Caitlin’s parents. School officials even attached a picture of the stick she was using, which Caitlin’s mother posted to Facebook.

The assault weapon confiscated at the scene of the crime.

Hopefully this goes on her permanent record and she doesn't get into college.

You know sometimes I get jealous of the younger people, then stories like this make me remembered how truly "free" we were growing up in the 20th century.

I played with stick guns all the time. We played cowboys and Indians on the playground (watch out libs, I just said something non-PC!!!!)

 

You know, that is actually a good idea. We should send her an AR22 for her and her family to enjoy the freedom of their Second Amendment as Americans. You know, to show they are legal and something to be cherished.

 

Used to have relay races and play dodge ball in the schoolyard when I was that age.

This poor kid probably has some gun nuts in the family ... with guns and killing already ingrained in her little mind.

Maybe she could accidentally shoot a family member, like that NRA fanatic mom in Jacksonville. Her 4 year old found the pistol in the back of the car while she was driving on the Interstate, and drilled her right through the back seat. Somehow she pulled over and survived. Talk about Karma...

 

Yea because any kid that plays with a stick as a gun must have lunatic parents. When I was a kid I used to pretend my gun was a stick. Not all male children are like you and played with Barbies.

Liberals - avoid facts, replace with emotional rhetoric and mistruths to show how bizarre they really are.

 

Sigh...the sooner people like this are run out of these positions and we can get back to sanity, the better. It's a stick people. Even though the girl pretends it's a gun....it's not going to ever become a gun.

Deny her an education for a day? How does that teach her anything?

I guess she'll learn you're not supposed to shoot people with sticks, you're supposed to use them to hit people.

 

I bet far more have been hurt by children finding a real gun and pretending it's a stick than by children pretending sticks were guns.

 

I got suspended in fifth grade for pretending to shoot myself in the head during our DARE class....I'll have to call my mom and ask if she blamed president Reagan

 

I think blame falls on the school. How could they be so negligent to allow a stick shaped like a gun to be on school grounds?!? I think sweeps of school grounds should be done hourly to ensure no stick in the shape of a gun be on school grounds. Further more, many rocks appear to be in the shape of hand grenades. We have serious concerns with trees as they continually drop these gun shaped sticks onto properties where anyone could get their hands on them! I'm fuming mad about this one. Tear down all trees immediately! And remove all rocks from the ground!!

 

She's screwed, that thing clearly has a pistol grip and a bayonet lug.

I know that if my son was in a US school, he would be suspended on a daily basis for things like this.

quick disclaimer: I had no issues with the preschool kid with the empty bullet taking time off, empty or not it WAS a bullet.

Yet this time its different being that its a stick found on the ground. I'm guessing the punishment would have been the same if she had used her fingers (no stick).

I guess I would have been fine if the teacher just said "put that down" ie: no punishment just a reminder to play nice.

i'm older now but I remember the crap we did as kids in the 70/80's and hell we used to pretend shoot each other with plastic guns all the dam time (not in recess obviously) hell around our farm we used to run around with our little bb guns all the dam time plinking stuff and occasionally got popped with a BB as well, no harm. If I compared the stuff I had in the trunk of my car in high school compared to now, WOW, countless times I know I had a 22LR and a 30/30 rifle in my trunk because we were going out plinking after school in the woods, i'm sure I would spend time in Juvi for that stuff if it happened in 2017.

Even the cops were cool, we would be out in the woods shooting aluminum cans and stuff and the cops would just say "nice gun, be careful, have a nice day" and drive off. Times sure have changed.

 

Whenever I see a thread like this, I have to ask the posters bemoaning the "sissifying of America" three things:

1. How many elementary schools do you think there are in this country?
2. How many 5-year-olds do you think are enrolled in those schools?
3. Why do you think there is any significance to an example of ONE such school having a stupid reaction to ONE such student?

There are tens of thousands of elementary schools and millions of students. There will ALWAYS be a story like this, given the sheer numbers involved.

Please demonstrate that this happens so frequently it's actually representative of what goes on in our public schools.
