All I can do is face palm. The immigration issue was one of the stalwarts of Trumps Campaign, yet the Democrats are willing to shutdown the government to protect them above the best interests of taxpaying Americans. It boggles the mind they think they can win on the issue now.

Well, lets not forget that this mess comes from years of avoiding the debate over immigration. Between wealthy people wanting cheap labor and democrats wanting more voters, the issue has just gotten worse.

It is the same for lousy trade agreements, race relations, etc...the list goes on and on. In the meantime it is the American people who get screwed. I cannot count the times I have seen some idiotic argument in favor of open borders as if it is the best thing since sliced bread. It isn't.

 

We need the wall, we need eVerify for all current and future employees. We need eVerify for ALL Government benefits, which includes state and local. The wall would help stem the the tide of illegal drugs. Then we need to institute VISA reform, to many illegals come here in a valid VISA and disappear into America. We should make anyone, and I do mean anyone caught in the US illegally gives up any chance to ever become legal for at least the next 25 - 50 years. They'd have to widen the southbound lanes at the border.

 

I would go further. Because of the lack of enforcement over the past several decades we need a deportation force beyond ICE. If we truly want to fix the problem then we need to fix it.

Much of the American public is just naive. I do believe they are being taken advantage of. Outside the borders of our cushy society are countries that operate solely by the law of the jungle. If we want to keep a stable society, we need to control our borders and be picky about who we let in. The liberal progressive belief that all human beings have good intentions is wrong.

I guess I'm not sure where this mantra that the welfare of dreamers is being placed over the welfare of American citizens is coming from.

Because of the shutdown? Aside from some federal employees, life in this country is totally unaffected by the shutdown.

I realize that this meme that Democrats want amnesty to get more voters is one of those made up right wing memes that gains credibility through constant repetition to a gullible and poorly informed audience, but it is neither false, nor is it a major issue.

This was always a GOP problem.

George W Bush wanted this issue addressed on his watched, and he begged GOP leaders to do something for eight years.

Obama significantly increased border security spending and staffing and dramatically reduced the rate of illegal immigration.

Now the ball is back in the GOP court. They are handicapped by a President whose campaign is based, at its core, on racism and xenophobia.

Trump created this crisis by unilaterally announcing an end to DACA. He did not need to do this. But, North Korea had just exploded what appeared to be a hydrogen bomb, and the White House needed a distraction from the finger in the eye that Kim Jong Un had just given Trump. And when this White House needs to change the subject. its frequent default is to play the bigotry card.

And in so doing, Trump handed the GOP a problem that it had no real intention of dealing with, and weighed it down with a leader whose rhetoric is as xenophobic an extremist as the far right wing base.

Having bungled their way into this self imposed crisis, the President has been talking out of all sides of his mouth.

One week, publicly saying that he would "take the heat" on immigration if Congress brought him a bill.

The next, going back on that committment and topping it off with a display of open racism, the likes of which have have never come out of the mouth of any President of the United States, ever.

Now, Trump is clearly not providing any sort of leadership at all, and is hiding.

He skipped the 100,000 a plate fundraiser, in which he had expected to bask in the glow of the top tenth of the one percent, who all came to bring their payoff checks and line Trump's pockets by paying the newly inflated prices to stay in his resort. He spent Sunday watching television.

So the man in the hot seat is Mitch McConnell, who is busy trying to avoid being boxed into breaking the Republican coalition by making a deal with Schumer and coming up with a DACA fix and a funding bill that can pass with at 2/3 plus one majority.

This would clearly be the best solution politically. Isolate Trump by handing him a veto proof bill.

Trump won't lead. McConnell and Schumer will have to do the job for him.

 

The wall is a pointless political gesture designed specifically to appeal to right wing bigots and xenophobes. That's all it ever was. A gimmick.

You are right about visas.

Most illegal immigrants who come to the US now, come on visas and overstay them.

Most of this DO NOT come from Mexico or Central America.

I’d prefer the government never shut down over a legislative agenda. If it were up to me I would pass a law that begins instant recall elections on the entire legislative branch if a shutdown ever occurs.

But that’s not he world we live in, and shutdowns are a tool republicans have used frequently in the past to get whatever they want.

You keep saying Democrats are shutting down the government for the benefit of illegal aliens. Couldn’t it also be said that the republicans are allowing the government to shut down rather than doing right by a group of people this country once welcomed?

Open borders might be acceptable, if all of the nations were prosperous nations. But when the US has a huge land mass south of us, all the way to south america, that is poor, open borders for the US would be suicide. It's safe to say that they've worn out their welcome. Not all of them, but many, and one bad one can spoil it for everyone. We already have to deal with bad apples that were born here, there's no sense or need to have to worry about the ones that don't even belong here.
