Vladimir Putin told Russian diplomats that he made a proposal to Donald Trump at their summit this week to hold a referendum to help resolve the conflict in eastern Ukraine, but agreed not to disclose the plan publicly so the U.S. president could consider it, according to two people who attended Putin’s closed-door speech on Thursday.

Details of what the two leaders discussed in their summit in Helsinki, Finland, remain scarce, with much of the description so far coming from Russia. While Putin portrayed the Ukraine offer as a sign he’s seeking to bring the four-year-old crisis to an end, a referendum is likely to be a hard sell with Ukraine and its backers in Europe, who remain committed to an 2015 European-brokered truce deal for the Donbas region, parts of which are controlled by Russian-backed separatists.

White House officials didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. If Putin’s account of Trump’s reaction is accurate, it would suggest a more flexible approach than the U.S. has shown to date on the issue. At the Helsinki meeting, Trump also agreed to consider a Putin request to question the former U.S. ambassador to Moscow over U.S. campaign-finance violations that critics say Trump should have dismissed outright.

Putin gave his latest account of the meeting during at a conference with top Russian ambassadors and officials at the Foreign Ministry in Moscow, the people said, asking not to be identified discussing the president’s comments to the part of the session that was closed to the public. One of the people said that Trump had requested Putin not discuss the referendum idea at the press conference after the summit in order to give the U.S. leader time to mull it.

The U.S. can crush Russia with sanctions.

Not one Nation wants war. All nations want money.

Trump will not do this because he has business ties with Russia. If the DEMs get the senate there should be a bill that demands Trump's tax returns. His tax returns will show ties with Russian oligarchs.

Putin is far craftier than Trump.
That's the worry. I presume a referendum in Eastern Ukraine
    would see pro-Russian people out-vote the pro-Ukrainians.
Otherwise why would Putin make such a suggestion?

And if you deny them money through sanctions they are more likely to go to war. And they have nuclear weapons. Lots of them.

What is the upside of crushing Russia? The downside is nuclear war.

If his tax returns aren't a big deal then why not release them?

Why wouldn't Putin go to war if you backed him into a corner? He did in the Ukraine.

You are asking why Putin wouldn't go to War with the U.S. because of Crimea?

The thing Putin has always wanted, that Trump has been unable to give him, is relief from the sanctions. It began at the convention with the weakening of the Republican platform, followed by the Trump tower meeting, then Trump's resistance to implementing the last round of sanctions.
So Putin offers up a fake referendum to give Trump cover to say "see they wanted to be Russian" and remove sanctions.
The real question is what is Trump getting in return for this.
    Hint: It isn't world peace.

What concessions did we get from Russia? From North Korea?

Trump is a disaster at foreign policy and I feel sorry for his handlers.

Remember when Usama got popped? THIS is what a real President looks like.

He probably ate a sandwich afterwards.

I wasn't aware they were negotiating concessions.

    When did that happen?

No. I am asking why Putin wouldn't go to war with the US if we pushed him hard enough.

The fact he invaded Ukraine after being pushed to hard shows he is not shy of using his military.

When a foreign hostile nation has hacked our elections I want the President to stand strong.

It was a sit down and all Trump could get was "well Donny, send your guys over here, we will figure it out".

    Your boy got played.

It's a very good question, just what motivates Trump with respect to Russia. He's been one very queer duck about Russia from the get-go and has clearly been on the same page with Putin's Russia for years already. His expressed views have aligned perfectly for those several years at least.

Because wily rulers know that you don't do polls and referendums, or ask public
questions unless you already know the outcome.

Yeah, I'm not so sure about Trump and election tampering. I think it is more about Trump and money. The Russians were "loaning" him money long before he was a candidate. That I feel is more why he doesn't want to release his tax returns, not that he is broke.
Was he in the laundry business? Probably. Like Manafort, Mueller has Trumps tax returns in one hand and business transactions in the other. It all depends on what he decides to pursue.
