McCain suffered quite a bit as a POW in North Vietnam! I don't know him much, but he does deserve respect for having served in the US military. It is amazing that he still made it to 81. Read here about his capture and ordeal: https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/john-mccain-pow/story?id=32574863
McCain was flying an A-4 Skyhawk when he got shot down. It's a subsonic attack fighter that replaced the A-1 Skyraider. Designed originally to provide the US Navy and Marine Corps with a simple low-cost lightweight attack and ground support aircraft, the Skyhawk was based on experience gained during the Korean War. Since the initial requirement called for operation by the US Navy, special design consideration was given to providing low-speed control and stability during take-off and landing, added strength for catapult launch and arrested landings, and dimensions that would permit it to negotiate standard aircraft carrier lifts without the complexity of folding wings. What really use to piss me off when people usually young people made fun that McCain couldn't raise his arms above his shoulders. I always had to explain why he couldn't, he was tortured while a guest at the Hanoi Hilton.
A good man who never stopped trying to do what he believed was right for his country. Of course he fell short here and there, we all do when do our jobs for years and decades, but he strived and strived and strived.
A fine American who dedicated his life to public service, often at great personal cost. I note there are still some unable to put aside their petty political obsessions to acknowledge his life. How poorly they reflect on the nation he risked his life for.
Good riddance. Any veteran, POW, or family member that tried to get to the truth about missing POW's will tell you what a piece of garbage McCain was. He did more than any other person to stop the release of information that would have led to the truth about POW treatment and the whereabouts and remains of those left behind. Thankfully a recording of him praising the Viet Cong was discovered and laid bare the trail of lies that paved the way for his Silver Star and political career. He was a complete disgrace.
I'll give her one thing, she would have been the best looking President we ever had if things had worked out differently, Not even that Russian was easier on the eyes.
I really do not understand why people care so much when a famous person died, esp an utter disgrace like McCain.
Yet another from the Bonespur Brigade... All you guys who are dissing him for his record in Hanoi.... Vas you dere, Charlie?
Damn !!! They haven't even started injecting McCain's corpse with embalming fluid and the attacks begin. Quoting John McCain when he was accused of being a carpetbagger: "Listen, pal. I spent 22 years in the Navy. My father was in the Navy. My grandfather was in the Navy. We in the military service tend to move a lot. We have to live in all parts of the country, all parts of the world. I wish I could have had the luxury, like you, of growing up and living and spending my entire life in a nice place like the First District of Arizona, but I was doing other things. As a matter of fact, when I think about it now, the place I lived longest in my life was Hanoi."
You get a radar warning in your plane the instant you are on the radar of a SAM before it ignites from the ground. That is the time to bank your plane hard perpendicular and kick-in your afterburner and get the puck out of there. McCain did not.
I'll have to watch the news and see what is happening down there in the southern desert. Few people realize that Arizona Territory was Confederate sympathetic during the U.S. Civil War. Still is.
Right about now McCain's cadaver is still in the hospital morgue. They won't be able to transfer it to a funeral home for the embalming treatment and face cream until after the autopsy.
Well he was famous if not infamous. People need heroes and even one that is suspect is better than none.
Palin should have stayed on the cheerleading squad and not entered politics. Russia is out there right next door.
I don't blame the Viet Cong for beating him up on capture. He was bombing them. Bomber pilots were not popular anywhere in any war in this world.
I suspect that McCain feels that the Hanoi Hilton was his purgatory for his bombing missions. I can't believe he was very good at hitting the mark.
So was Southern California. The Union Army had to garrison Fort Drum at San Pedro, Ca to keep an eye on everyone. There was one civil war battle fought in Arizona, Battle of Picacho Pass in 1862.
Its so interesting that when someone dies they are suddenly remembered as being a Saint. McCain was no Saint, he was deeply flawed and made a number of huge mistakes, not to mention committing criminal acts as a politician. If you want to acknowledge his life, do it honestly.
When McCain first entered politics he was a conservative. By the time he was elected to the Senate he had earned a reputation as being a maverick. His best bud in the Senate was Senator Lieberman and eventually Sen. Graham. Soon McCain became one of the most powerful senators in the Senate. By 2000 he started ignoring the GOP and even his constituents back in Arizona. McCain even teamed up with the Infamous Sen.Teddy Kennedy trying to pass an illegal alien amnesty bill but the American people were loud, 'we been lied to to many times and no more rewarding lawbreakers with amnesty.' McCain kept moving more to the left. He started acting like a neocon or a liberal, war mongering and nation building. What McCain did do was he voted against repealing DADT, that there is no place in the military for buggery and the military should never be used for social engineering. McCain was always for a strong military and always pro military. The last McCain approval rating I'm aware of was 51% approval by Republicans and 70% by Democrats. Shows how much McCain has moved towards the left during the past decade or so.
My all time hero of the West, Lt. Col. / Brig. Gen. James Henry Carleton, was at that battle. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Henry_Carleton
