Some very silly people are saying its a bio weapon. In fact virtually every single time a new virus crosses over into the human population outside of the the same conspiracy junkies 'Bio Weapon'. Exactly the same thing was said about SARS, Bird Flu and before that AIDS. Each 'jumped' the species barrier and almost immediately people were quoting experts who claimed the viruses concerned were engineered. Those same 'experts' then conveniently disappeared back into the wood work as soon as it became apparent this was not the case.

True it is highly infectious but in terms of its severity its less dangerous or crippling than the average flu bug. Lethality is less than 1% and almost exclusively limited to the elderly (over 70's) and/or people with per-existing medical conditions and compromised immune systems. In fact something like 80% of all victims have only mild symptoms or none at all. So as bio weapons go its tending to the 'lame' end of the spectrum. A modified flu would be more effective.

And yes it is disrupting trade and travel but it is disrupting everyone's trade and travel, so everyone loses. But this also occurs with other viral outbreaks

It is possible from an animal experimentation lab in Wuhan but no-one from the Worlds intelligence services are claiming that fascility is a bio weapons lab. To date it appears to be similar to labs run by just about every other advanced country in the world that experiments/tests animal viruses (just less competent than most). Australia for instance has one of the most highly respected facilities for that kind of work in the World based in the regional town of Geelong but that lab is most definitely NOT a center for bio-warfare experiments.

So unless they are in the most at risk groups people should chillax, ignore the media hype (like what else would the media do with a story like this), practice impeccable personal hygiene when traveling or in public (i.e. using wipes antiseptic gels etc on shared surfaces & washing their hands etc plus perhaps stock up on a few extra groceries.

There is no suggestion this one has done that.

Its genetics matches (in part) similar viruses found in bats not human ones. Secondly it's new i.e. it hasn't been seen in humans before ergo it came from somewhere. Humans can modify viruses but we don't (yet) build complete working ones from scratch - least ways not ones with this level of complexity.

I did some Corona shopping today, basically just extra supplies and some long life items. Not going overboard but keeping extra stock of some items etc. Even under the worst of circumstances Australia is probably not a bad place to be in a pandemic

When did it become evident that none of these were bioengineered? Couldn't they have been made from diseases found in animals anyway? And wouldn't being able to vector through animals be something you would want in a bioweapon?

The major problem of bioweapons it that they are like poison gas on steroids. They are far more likely to rebound on you if you ever use them but in an especially horrible way. It gets into the whole idea of war being so evil because we're working really hard to come up with the best way of killing people ever and we might just succeed.

The joke about AIDS was always that its jumping into humans meant someone somewhere was ****ing monkeys. And Corvid means the Chinese eat bats but haven't they been doing that for millennia? (and how do they taste?)

As soon as their genomes were mapped. Like all living organisms viruses and bacteria have 'family trees' of viruses closely related due to the similarity of their gene lines and the environments where they live/are found. SARS and the current virus are both members of the corona virus group. Bird flu was a member of the influenza group and AIDS (when we finally developed the technology to map viral gene structure) was found to be part of the SIV group.

As for 'making' a virus from scratch? we are only just starting to develop this technology and in any case nature has had a billion years to select for the best ones already. And if you did 'invent' one it would stand out like dogs balls from all the other existing groups. Far easier to modify than start from scratch.

As for vectoring through other species this is hard - if it wasn't we'd be seeing new viral diseases springing up in humans every day. Viruses adapt to the species they exist in, to cross a species gap two species have to be A) very similar (think horses and donkeys). B) in close physical proximity for extended periods (think bird flu) or C) both (think a human hunter killing a ape and getting some of its SIV infected blood into an open wound.

In short the greater the genetic distance apart two species are the less likely they are to be able to share viruses.

In short it would be hard to take a virus that say infected cats and then weaponize it so that a cat could infect a human. Far easier to simply weaponize a virus of bacteria that readily infects the target species to begin with. If you target is an enemies wheat crop you weaponize a species that infects grasses not a leaf crop like say lettuce.

P.S. Happy for any biologists/Doctors to point out the gaping gaps in my post. I'm sure there are some.

Or he could be living in a civilized country. Here are the rates of SOS Medecin in Paris. You can call them at any hour of the day or night. The visit is reimbursed at 70% by social security, and many many french people have additional coverage

    VG + MD Visite à domicile la journée de 8h à 20h 35 € home visit from 8 to 8PM reimbursed 70 percent comes out to 10E5
VG + VRD Visite samedi après 12h, dimanche et février 55 €
    VG + VRN Visite la nuit de 20h à minuit et de 6h à 8h 71 €
VG + VRM Visite la nuit de minuit à 6 heures 84,50 €
    ECG Electrocardiogramme 23,86 €

Waiting time depends on description of symptoms over the phone (most we've ever waited was three hours)

Two terms to become aware of:

    Gain of function.

    Dual use.

The AP fact checked that STORY and determined that it was a lie. Trump did not reduce CC funding.

Please tell us more about how we have a lot to learn from China in 2020 like making gunpowder and paper.

Worth looking into, for sure. If you're relying on wood heat anyway, you may as well have it do triple duty (cook, heat, water)!

Ranges are the bomb. Does the same heating your basic slow combustion, so you loose nothing. The trickier thing is placement, since many modern kitchens don't have the space or layout to include one. You may have to rip out a few cabinets. And of course, for it to heat the whole house you're going to need a fairly open floor plan.

PS: We've always used wood, too. Nothing else comes close.

I have, so no dog eating required. Besides, I'd be eating everything from my vegetable gardens before I'd get anywhere near pets :p
