Fair enough. My building had 2 parking attendants. When min wage hit $15, they were replaced by pay machines. I don't eat fast food, but they have replaced cashiers with touch screens and phone apps.

You would gladly pay, but they must also pay. Are they better off?

 

That’s a first. Quitting a job over how much someone makes at a different job. So he was willing to do the job for $15 an hour but now won’t do the job at $15 an hour because someone else is making $15 an hour doing another job? Hmmmm...your sons friend doesn’t sound too bright.

The very poorest are making the real minimum wage; $0.00/hr. A modest amount of inflation hurts them the most.

 

The same argument can be made for one choosing to handle blood and feces for the same money as working the drive-thru window. In the end, raising min wage is nothing more than a raise for the tax man. The worker is no better off.

 

Less aggressive than some want, but I doubt it really is the disaster you think it will be. There is no reason the entire country couldn't absorb the initial $10 wage. After that the yearly increases are a declining percentage of the existing wage. 10% and less per year is not that hard to weather. Just raise prices 10% a year and make some extra profit out of the deal.

 

Not really. People who become an EMT do so because they like to help people. They certainly don’t do it for the pay. And to quit being an EMT because someone else makes the same pay in another job means the person really didn’t want to be an EMT anyway. Patients are better off that he quit

 

You can see where it says 150,000 right? I bet those who lose a job will find it rather signifigant.

I don't think minimum wage increases result in any significant inflation. Union contracts, back when membership was high, yes, but there aren't enough minimum wage workers to have much of an effect.

 

No one, of course, is claiming that. I just merely, correctly, pointed out that the increase will not tank the economy like you originally claimed. MA economy didn’t tank when minimum wage went to $12/yr so there is no reason to believe the increase to $10 for 2021 will tank FL economy.

A weird concept that some Americans don't understand. Same here, I'd gladly take a bit of hit in the hip pocket so that there aren't homeless in the streets begging when I go for my walk.

I see your point, but as an employer for 30+ years, there is no way to attract top employees without offering competitive pay. Patients are worse off as a result of $15. min wage. Even the good ones would rather work where the risk of contracting Covid or worse is much lower.

I agree EMTs should make more than $15/hr but that seems to be the going rate for someone starting out.

This is forced, not merit based. If a grocery manager is now making 15 and the bagger is making the current 8.56 you think the manger wont expect a raise when the bagger then makes his wage?

 

That is a good point. But then if we have a low minimum wage, these people can't even afford to live. Is it right to expect people to work 40 hour per week making your food, but they have to live in a tent?

 

True. And if the guy shagging shopping carts is comfortable, will he learn a new skill and move up?
