The downhill trajectory of the Republican Party began with Reagan. The nutty economic ideas come from the Regan era. And let’s us not forget the Iran/Contra scandal. If they held onto the hostages until after Reagan was elected, that Reagan would sell the military parts that Carter had denied them. The parts were sold through an Israeli arms dealer and the profits were used to wage an illegal war in Nicaragua. On the return trip they brought back cocaine which fueled Miami’s cocaine craze in the 80’s. They used the profits from the cocaine to fund other “secret” projects. Just as the story was exploding on the nightly news, Bill Barr advised Bush to just pardon everyone involved, which he did, which essentially killed the investigation and justice.

 

They can "empathize" all over the place, for all the good that does. Conservatives give FAR more to charity than liberals do. Actions speak louder than words.

 

Conservatives do absolutely donate more money than liberals do but liberals donate their time by significant margin. Remove donations to churches, some that do a questionable amount of public charity, and liberals out donate conservatives financially as well.
