I am giving up fast food and Facebook. These are two things that I love. I'm posting my intent here to help keep myself honest. If I backslide, I will confess it here. Lent is: February 17 till April 3, 2021. What are you giving up for this year's Lent season?
Ignore the unenlightened brats we have in this forum. They are often rude and like to cause contention. I'm LDS and I've given up plenty over the decades since my baptism. I try to eat well but the wife is a really great cook. I think she wants my life insurance to cash in.
As it says in Colossians 2:16 (ERV) = Don’t Follow Rules That People Make 16 So don’t let anyone make rules for you about eating and drinking or about Jewish customs (festivals, New Moon celebrations, or Sabbath days).
Are you disagreeing with Colossians 2:16? = https://classic.biblegateway.com/verse/en/Colossians 2:16
Lent lasts 40 days. Are people supposed to be mini-Moses and go without food and water for 40 days and 40 nights? The Jesus character said to do one’s fasting in secret and not to be a showboat about it. Matthew 6:16-18 (ERV) = 16 "When you fast, don’t make yourselves look sad like the hypocrites. They put a look of suffering on their faces so that people will see they are fasting. The truth is, that’s all the reward they will get. 17 So when you fast, wash your face and make yourself look nice. 18 Then no one will know you are fasting, except your Father, who is with you even in private. He can see what is done in private, and he will reward you."
The bible does not require that anybody fast at any time ever that I am aware of. The verses you cite are part of the same theme of Matthew 6 about hypocrisy which is a recurring them in the Bible. The Bible condemns both types of it---being holier than thou toward others and pretending to be one way while acting in another. The point is that one's religious relationship is with God and God only and judgment will be by God and God only.
So, the real question is what makes up a full relationship with God? And, what is the purpose of the judges in Israel all throughout the Old Testament and also Bishops in the new testament? They are judges in Israel to. I think having a full relationship with God is to do as he asks, keep his commandments, love him and they neighbors, to do his work building up the kingdom of God on the earth. He gave apostles, prophets, evangelists, teachers, deacons, priests and others for the edification of God and the understanding of the people so they can have that personal relationship with the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. So, to say there is no physical organization necessary is simply not true. Jehovah (Jesus) organized a physical organization in both OT times and NT times. Jesus also called the 70's to go and preach the gospel. The real question is, which organization? There are many. Which one has God's authority given to it? They can't all be true because they contradict each other somewhere. But, if that organization exists, there is but one.
For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them does not suggest any "organization" is required whatsoever, but believe whatever works for you.
I'm Orthodox, and we follow what the Catholics call the Black Fast. It was determined by the Church Fathers, that since the diet was lighter in the East, that fish and animal products would not be allowed. Shell fish are allowed. Since our cannons are very austere, a certain amount of leeway (economia) is given and it is misused sometimes by church goers to an extreme - especially in this country. Anyway it is a healthy diet, and the monks live to a ripe old age. Fasting consists of: 1 - No meat 2 - No Milk Products 3 - No eggs 4 - No fish - shell fish is allowed 5 - No poultry 6 - No sex - (It's called Orthodox birth control) What days must one Fast? 1 - Wednesdays and Fridays 2 - Forty days before Easter 3 - Forty days before Christmas 4 - Fifteen days before the Dormition 5 - Apostle Fast - amount of days vary 6 - Certain saints days
Moses was not the only one that went without food and water for 40 days. Many of our glorified Saints did as well. Some lived on Holy Communion, and others ate only a piece of bread.
First post with nastiness comes from a christian, why don't you try giving up insulting people who do not agree with you?
