    https://www.breitbart.com/politics/...s-more-bike-and-bus-lanes-lower-speed-limits/

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg vowed Thursday to stem rising traffic fatalities by imposing a host of fresh restrictions on everyday drivers while boosting those who choose to walk or use bicycles.

To that end he seeks more dedicated bus and bike lanes to get people out of their cars, retimed signals to favor pedestrians, enhanced speed cameras, greater traffic law enforcement and lower speed limits as part of the plan...

It urges pilot programs to study and promote greater use of speed cameras,

    Just what we need.

which the department says could provide more equitable enforcement than police traffic stops.

Can democrats discuss anything without race baiting.

Automakers, meanwhile, will be prodded to adopt more crash avoidance features and publish detailed information about them for consumers on window stickers for new car sales.

Just what we need. More cost and complexity added to cars.

So here we have liberal government in action, finding problems that don't exist and developing solutions no one wants.

    That's what you think.

If we look at the efficiency of the road system, public transit services or the electrification of transportation, the US is 20 years behind Canada and Europe.

Yes, when some are claiming our infrastructure is disintegrating while they watch, people are unemployed/underemployed by the hundred thousands, landlords looking to file bankruptcy, and Buttiigieg feels this is important at this time....

    Just.... amazing....

The existing public transportation in America works fine in my experience. I commuted via public transportation my entire working career and for a while commuted to Washington DC from West VA on a commuter train. Fewer and fewer people are commuting to cities in America and more and more people are moving out of cities. So like I said, Buttgig is looking for solutions to problems that don't exist.

I advise you to go and see what is being done elsewhere.

In particular in France, UK, Germany, Canada and Norway.

Are you going to try to make me believe that there are fewer traffic jams today than 10-15 years ago?

How many places do we know of where the posted speed limit is too fast? I can’t hardly think of any. One? Two?

On the other hand the number of places I can think of that are 10 mph slower than it really needs to be is…countless. School zone during active hours? 20 mph. Great. But Outside school zone during any hour in countless neighborhoods where I live? 25.

Can anyone explain to me why the difference between a normal street speed limit and one with hundreds of little children everywhere is only 5 mph? And that 25 is then regularly reduced to 15 by huge speed bumps and raised crosswalks?

The problem with speed limits slower than they need to be is there will always be drivers who will risk the ticket rather than drive at a stupidly slow speed. But then there will always be drivers who will only drive the actual speed limit, if not less.

What’s the problem here? Speed disparity. The most noticeable occurrence of this is in on ramps to freeways where the freeway is going along at 65-70, and stupid drivers are trying to merge at 40 mph without getting up to the speed of traffic, creating a huge speed disparity that is inherently dangerous.

Merely lowering speed limits as a principle of making roads safer does in no way necessarily do that at all. In many cases it can and will do the opposite.

All that said: I’m talking daylight hours here. Nighttime is a whole different thing, and in regards to people dying, the motivation behind all this, there are important differences to note, not the least of which is drunk drivers. Speed cameras and enhanced cameras helping law enforcement catch drunk and speeding drivers at night I’d be totally in favor of.

But I suspect deaths aren’t really the motivation with Pete. I think he’s simply more interested in forcing people to switch to public transport by making regular driving so god awful retarded, and is hiding behind public safety in order to do it.

    Wild theory I know

Oh so cars will get even more expensive, awesome. Cant wait to see base model economy cars priced at $40k to make up for all the regulations and of course inflation Democrats will introduce. Poor wont be able to afford cars so they'll be forced to live in large cities which is what liberals want because the denser packed the herd the easier it is to manage.

My entire town, basically. 35 mph is the county standard for 2 lane no sidewalk residential roads. That's ****ing insane and of course people do 40+. Years ago a bunch of people from my community got our roads lowered to 25 mph and additional stop signs installed and I'm told it was a 3 year fight with the county board that was only won when residents realized constantly phoning in complaints to the sheriffs office got our area flagged in some sort of highway safety review audit process I don't really understand.

95% of Canada's population lives in less than 5% of the country.

    The rest is nature.

It's normal that hundreds of thousands of kilometers of road are not paved.

Sooo! I just pointed out the ridiculousness of comparing a nation with a fraction of roads/population with a nation with millions of miles paved, graveled and dirt roads..

    Really bad comparison

    I want more bike lanes.

When I bike to work, there is a stretch of a major road without a bike lane that I cannot avoid. I've been hit here on my bike by a car a couple of years ago, luckily at low speed. I came away mostly unharmed, except for bruises and a sprained wrist. Now, a bike lane by that road would be great. What's wrong with giving people the opportunity for safer, cheaper and healthier transportation? I am sure high blood pressure and diabetes could be reduced on average, if more people would/could bike to work. I know that frequent biking is keeping my pre-diabetes in check.

The commuter train lot I commuted from 10 years ago had a packed parking lot of hundreds of cars. Now it is six or seven cars because of telework. The solution to traffic is being implemented. That solution is telework.

We do not need speed cameras. We do not need for cars to be made more expensive by yet more government regulations. For me, living in a cold climate rural State, an electric car is worthless. If someone makes one that has a decent range, works in the cold, and does not cost 2-3 times what a regular cars costs, I will buy one.

Having an individual car is and has been the American way. We have a saying that originated in the 50s, "Two Cars in Every Garage." I'm sure that whatever France and Europe does is great for them. But I only care about what is good for America. So as I said, Buttgig is trying to solve a problem that does not exist.

There is nothing wrong with bike paths. There is something wrong with more spending by a Federal government that is close to Thirty Trillion in debt and still dreaming up more ways to spend money. Buttgig should be working on ways to save money for both his Department and for the citizens he serves. Bike paths for commuting serve a local requirement and should be funded by local government.

And cut speed limits? Are we to go back to a Federal max speed limit of 55?

The most absurd thing was Buttgig's proposal to retime traffic light to favor pedestrians.

The overarching goal is to make cars as expensive, as regulated, and difficult to drive as possible to encourage the little people to not drive cars - a goal driven by a cult like belief in global warming.

Speaking from my experience of living in CA for 21 years, take away the millions of illegals along with the cars they drive and poof, no traffic at all. Ever year on A Day Without A Mexican,(cool your jets, there’s a movie with the same name) otherwise known as Cinco De Mayo, traffic hardly exists. I’m not saying everyone who stayed home from work that day is an illegal, but hundreds of thousands of them are. My good friends on this board from both sides of the aisle, @The Mello Guy and @HB Surfer will attest to this.

You managed to make a connection between California traffic jams and illegals.

    I congratulate you.

    It's all true.

I love my Mexican brothers and sisters. As a people, they totally rock. Some of my very best friends since childhood are of Mexican decent, but they all identify as Americans first and have a deep place in their heart for Mexico. Virtually, all the 2nd and 3rd generation are not good with open borders. I don't see them on bikes, but they love a good pick up truck.

The connection is the Biden administration. Bootgig talks about too many accidents and how speed limits need to be lowered and cars made safer and the Biden administration will not deport drunk illegal drivers.
