Musk's ego painted him into the corner where he had to go through with the purchase or be prosecuted for illegally manipulating twitter's stock. Twitter's Board marched him down the garden path on that one. They forced him to fund their parachutes at premium prices.

As for what he is doing with it, it remains to be seen. The site seems to have some random glitches. Maybe he will be able to salvage enough of his workforce to straighten that out. Losing half his top advertisers though is going to take some time to sort. Perhaps his purge of the woke-est of the woke is part of that strategy. Manufacturing a fake feud with Apple/Tim Cook this week leaves me skeptical he is really focused on anything other than keeping his own impression counts up though.
