Genocide isn’t just about slaughter and as tragic as 30,000 deaths are there are a few things to consider.

1. Not all of those 30,000 deaths are civilian. How many are combatants being killed in battle is unclear. I have no doubt that a huge portion of that number are civilians but the number of civilian deaths is not 30,000.

2. You said that 700,000 Palestinians lost their land in 1948. How many Palestinians are there now? 4 million? Does that sound like genocide? 2/3 of European Jews died in WWII. Like 90% of the First Nations people in America died with the conquest of America. 30,000/4,000,000 is not a genocide. Exponential population growth is not a hallmark of genocide.

3. Palestinians have made a culture that places dying as a martyr as the best thing you can do. Mothers have been aired on Palestinian TV praying to Allah that their child will be martyred in fighting Israel. It’s a tragedy that the culture is built on such a terrible concept and it’s wrong that western media plays into the idea that Palestinians are not willing participants in this debacle. I’m not saying that this makes it ok for Israel to drop 1,000 lb bombs on them. It’s wrong. But that culture of death is a huge part of the reason that there is no peace in Gaza. The audio recording of the terrorist bragging to his parents about killing innocents on October 7 and then being praised as a hero is chilling.the fact that they paraded Shani Louk around on a pickup truck for her corpse to desecrated is chilling. That culture that makes this kind of behaviour acceptable and normal needs to be changed.

 

So, the Israelis never stole, and KEPT, Palestinian lands? 700,000 Palestinians did not lose their homes to the Israelis, never allowed to return? That is all just made up, huh?

That culture that you seem to despise is one born of desperation. It is no different than any other culture in history that has risen up and fought against their oppressors. If they didn't try and fight, people would say "well, if they really wanted change they would fight for it." Not only that, but it is not a blanket sentiment. If you think that the vast majority of the mothers in Palestine don't want their children to live long happy lives, then you have just guzzled the kool-aid. They are just people, like any other people on Earth. They just happen to live under a draconian oppressive regime that likes to come in and "mow the grass" on a regular basis.

As far as it being genocide, according to the UN definition it very well could be. At the very least, the plan is ethnic cleansing. There are groups of settlers that have the support of the Israeli government that are just waiting for the green light to go into Gaza and settle it.

Palestine needs protection from its oppressors to be given a chance to establish itself. That is the only way the region will become free of the violence that has plagued it for so long. That is impossible with the actions Israel has taken for so many decades.

When humans have had it drilled into their heads for centuries that "God" favors them they will do any and all manner of atrocities because they believe "God" wants them to because he loves them and favors them. This applies to both sides in this conflict and will never, ever end until religion and this insidious and odious "God" belief dies.

The sad thing is that it never will end. It is hard to imagine nonbelievers committing the atrocities committed in the name of "God". Capturing women and young girls, gang raping them, torturing the, burning them alive, chopping their heads off. With very few exceptions humans will not do such things unless they believe a God or Allah "loves" them and favors them and wants them and only them to win.

That is what President Abbas has held to.

During his long, long presidency, he has worked with the IDF against terrorism and has worked for a negotiated settlement of differences - including working with the US under Bush and before, joining the UN as a observer state in order to be able to enlist the arms of the UN that deal with peace, justice, economy, etc.

He has stuck to that even as Israel has repeatedly stolen large parcels of land for colonization by Israel. Israel has coopted his rule in large sections of West Bank even as Abbas mitigates for nonviolence and negotiations only.

One big problem here is that it has been long demonstrated to Palestinians that negotiation is a failed direction.

Gaza has been in a different position - noticing that negotiations do not work and living under the blockade of Israel, stifling all economic progress (including zero exports), denying travel, and keeping them in desperate need of food and medicine for the last decades. Citizens of Gaza have not even been allowed to fish in their waters, yet have constantly been rated has having half their population noted to be "food insecure".

Given that a blockade is war and that Israel has perpetuated that war for decades with ZERO willingness to negotiate and with NO interest from the wester world, I don't find it even slightly surprising that they built a military as best they could.

Ignoring for the moment the validity of their methods, Gaza has caused greater recognition of the position of Gaza and Israel's 20 years of war against them. Today, the western world is getting better recognition of the situation in Gaza - now and throughout.

This came a great sacrifice. But, 20 more years of blockade faced every person in Gaza with looking at the fact that they and their children had NO future and would spend their lives trying not to starve.

 

Accepting bad deal 7 decades ago did not guarantee peace ? who is the one "arguing out of ignorance" --- your words .
