The next Judge needs to ensure these idiots have no more children in their care. Ever. Once they get out of prison, of course.

The First Amendment (Amendment I) to the United States Constitution prohibits the making of any law respecting an establishment of religion, impeding the free exercise of religion, abridging the freedom of speech, infringing on the freedom of the press, interfering with the right to peaceably assemble or prohibiting the petitioning for a governmental redress of grievances. It is one of the ten amendments that comprise the Bill of Rights.

And, how does that apply to child neglect?

    - - - Updated - - -

By legal definition, it's not the same...

Though they probably could get them on manslaughter...

I also disagree with their original conviction. They were found guilty of involuntary manslaughter. When you refuse to take your kid to the doctor that is an entirely voluntary act. They should have been convicted of voluntary manslaughter and spent time in jail.

It seems very convenient for everyone to denounce this couples religious convictions, as fanatical as they are.
Could it be that god has his own plan for them? Or for the innocent "souls" he harvested?

Or how about they are just crazy simpletons caught up in even crazier religious dogma.

You'll forgive me for being angry at such murderous blind faith. does anyone think that should be the point of religion?

I wish they could charge them with that, but they'd have to prove that they intended to kill the children...

    Under PA law:

The law would only allow for involuntary...

I think everybody's problem with these two is that they neglected to properly care for their children, and both children died as a result...

Well that explains it. But at least they can be found in violation of probation and sentenced to prison now. Anything that keeps their dumb asses away from kids works for me.

    And THEN some....raised the dead.

HE had no problem with humans helping other humans to get/be well, whatsoever, as a reflection of God's Will.

My knee-jerk reaction when I saw this was one of outrage. I believe in the baby Jesus but always took our kids to medical professionals.

Interesting questions will arise in cases such as this. If we as a society deem the parents to be criminally negligent than do we also prosecute those who are adults yet do not seek medical professionals and try homeopathic remedies, don't go for annual exams, rely on prayers vs medical treatment etc?

If we say that we only protect the children and it is the right of society to do that, then what about the unborn? Do we criminalize abortion?

What about the gay parents who give hormones to change the gender of their children, do we now prosecute them?

You couldn't prosecute an adult because they're an adult, and it's their decision whether or not to seek medical treatment...

Completely criminalizing abortion presents a problem because of the number of circumstances that can result in a pregnancy, i.e. rape, incest, etc...

I could get behind prosecuting people who give hormonal drugs to kids...

    There's no logic behind that...

NO and yes. Homeopathic cures have a medical basis, and represent an honest attempt to help cure one's children.

Hormones to alter little kids' sexuality?

    INSANITY.

but you see my point. Once we as a society step in and say that we know better than the "parents", then that must also be true with abortion. How the life is created is irrelevant because we would be protecting children. I in no way shape or form agree with what the parents did. I would like to seem them dragged behind a dune buggy for a few miles.

But, if society is going to step in then be prepared for the bigger picture because it must be addressed.

HERE IS THE THING: When one pulls quotes from the Bible they can justify anything. Are you suggesting that only you know what is right or wrong when it comes to doing that?

God gave man the ability to reason and to explore His universe, to better our fellow man and to benefit our fellow man. Medicine, when used for good, shows us God's gifts.

I don't understand people who do stuff like this. I get not going to a doctor immediately upon getting sick and trying to let the body handle the sickness, but after awhile if their condition doesn't get better, it's time to seek medical attention.

then change it to chanting, or suntanning; whatever.

The point is if society feels they can step in and make those decisions then are we going to do it for adults as well? Or, are we ready to view abortion as the same. If we say that we must become advocates for the child then the same is true for the unborn with the beating heart.

This will make for an interesting paradox for leftists.

I curious to see how the pro-"parental rights" and pro-"religious freedom" people from the circumcision ban thread respond to this.

The reason it becomes criminal neglect is because a child cannot make these decisions for themselves...

I didn't get to look at that thread...

Personally I agree with you. It's like with chocolate milkshakes; if God didn't want us to drink them then he would not have taught us how to make them.

But, if we are to step in and act as advocates for children then we must do so in all cases, including abortion, and criminalize abortion.

I'm feeling you. And what child would elect to be murdered? Regardless of your position on abortion, the same consideration must be given.

OK, then when does society step in with Christian Scientists? How do we monitor the health and welfare of the child? How do we know that the child is sick? Or, do we wait until the child dies and then arrest the parents? If you want to go down that bunny hole then we must also do it for abortion.

There is no such thing as being a little pregnant and no such thing as being a little bit terminally ill.

To use your own words back at you, it's no so cut and dry, is it?

I hear you, and, believe me, I don't like abortion at all...

However, I feel that it would unfair to apply a universal rule, with regard to abortion, due to the varying, sometimes criminal, circumstances under which a pregnancy can occur...

For example, while I don't like abortion, it would be difficult for me to see a woman who got pregnant due to rape, or, a young child who got pregnant due to incest, and to tell them, welp, abortion is wrong, and you just gotta suck it up...

    - - - Updated - - -

See my above response, for specific examples...

Also, the child in this case was obviously sick...

I don't want to make this thread turn into an abortion thread but I use it to point out that Pandora's box would be opened if society wants to become advocates for all children

and, wrt pregnancy, there are 2 lives involved, the mommy and the child. Too often the left refuses to address the most innocent and overlooks them.
