3 officers were fired from the Wilmington Police Department in NC on Tuesday over racist comments

Looking at this it seems like they said some things that were inappropriate. But I also understand the frustrations of the current situation. Should they have been fired:

 

In a related story a black cop who says all whites should be killed was promoted to police chief as the media applauded nearby.

 

the question is, do cops actually represent a cross section of white society, or are racists over represented within the police force?

 

I love how it's a racial slur if a white dude says it, but black people call babies "little *****" to their faces.

 

They see the reality of crime in black neighborhoods.

Most white people shouting "defund the police" wouldn't dare walk through a black neighborhood at night... and if they did, their white asses would be jumped or disappeared before they made it around the block.

White folks come into black neighborhoods everyday and night and they are not jumped, beaten, raped or murdered. Do you guys even know what defund the police is?

Ha, my brother lived down by Churchill Downs (that majestic horse track). Downs is nice, but once you leave the gate, it's a different world... I drive too nice of a truck to leave it on the sidewalk for long.

Noooobody is trying to go to the West end of Louisville, and if you are, there's really only one reason... for drugs.

I call it the drunk test... if you get drunk and stumble down the sidewalk in Prospect or Indian Hills or Middletown or Norton Commons (all neighborhoods), chances are people are likely to help you find your way home.

If you get drunk and stumble down the sidewalk in Portland or Fern Creek, you're going to get rolled.

Thats just the way it is.

You're black. Would YOU feel safe stumbling home drunk through south Chicago? There's no realistic answer other than no.

 

Which means there are white folks going down to the West end of Louisville.

I feel comfortable going ANYWHERE there are black folks, hell there are some white neighborhoods that I wouldn't go as a black man by myself, so I guess it's tit for tat.

 

How forinicating stupid of them to be saying this stuff while itvwas being recorded. Itvwas seriously dumb enough to say those things but to create proof of their own stupidity is almost "ciminal".

They say that criminals are stupid. I agree criminals are but these cops make criminals look like Rhode scholars.

Bullshit. If the body count in Chicago was happening in Afghanistan, you'd avoid the country at all costs. People would be demanding we bring the troops home.

But because its Chicago, for some reason we give it a pass.

In 1980, I moved in to an all black neighborhood in what was considered a dangerous yet "historic" part of town. I bought an abandoned old house for $16,000 and slowly fixed it up as I worked a full time job.

The house was a duplex with an older Black lady (Mrs. B) living upstairs. I did not listen to my business savvy friends and neither evicted her nor raised her rent. I made it clear to her that she could stay as long as she liked since she had been living in the house longer than I.

Except for the "shot house"/"nip joint" across the street, the neighborhood was largely comprised of working class families who sent their kids to school while they went to work.

The truly troublesome neighborhoods of crack houses and thug nests were just a block or two to the North and my neighbors were just as hostile as I was to the Black crack-heads who preyed on the nicer sections of the neighborhood to the South.

Briefly put, time passed, my older neighbors died or moved away as the neighborhood became gentrified.

In addition to being well armed, I'm convinced that the reason I had no trouble in that neighborhood was because I made a genuine effort to treat my neighbors with respect and generosity. Also, having Mrs. B on "her" front porch with her church friends didn't hurt race relations.

Finally, I don't think that "... it's tit for tat" nor do I believe that all Black neighborhoods are dangerous for Whites even though there were many Black neighborhoods that, according to my neighbors, were unsafe for anyone, regardless of color.

You can tell more about a neighborhood by the way the residents treat their homes than by the skin color of the residents.

My realistic answer is "yes". I grew up on the south side of Chicago (had to live there because my father was a cop) and never experienced any kind of crime there. I moved to the suburbs after college but visited home frequently. Never had an issue.

It's not really fair to judge a community solely based on news stories or movies. I lived in North Carolina for several years. As soon as I said that I was from Chicago, people clammed up and asked if there were Al Capone types on every street corner. Laughable if Ashton Kutchner was there hosting "Punk'd". Absolutely ludicrous outside that.

Edited to add: Admittedly, though, I wouldn't be stumbling home drunk.

When I lived in Fort Lee, NJ and traveled into parts of NYC, Newark and Jersey City at night, I must admit I was never jumped or beaten, but the cops profiled a white guy in a black neighborhood and stopped me because they thought I might be up to no good. That was probably because white people didn't go into those areas at night because it was too dangerous.

 

No matter what they call those little babies, no one is going to care unless a white person says it.
