Dozens of people were unaccounted for after portions of a high-rise condo building north of Miami Beach collapsed early Thursday, killing at least one person. The Miami-Dade Police Department confirmed to CBS News on Thursday afternoon that 99 people are unaccounted for, and 53 people have been accounted for.

Surfside, Florida, Mayor Charles Burkett said earlier that two people were taken to a hospital and one of them died. Miami-Dade Assistant Fire Chief Ray Jadallah said 10 people were treated at the scene of the huge pile of rubble.

Dozens of fire-rescue units responded to the collapse. CBS Miami says rescuers are desperately trying to reach trapped residents. Some may be stuck in the rubble, the station said, adding that firefighters used truck-mounted ladders to reach people stuck on balconies. They also did a floor by floor search.

It was a high-rise condominium building called Champlain Towers South, CBS Miami reports.

Unbelievably tragic. Prayers for those missing and for those trying to rescue victims.

Now we have to wonder if it was a flaw in the material, design, or did it have help?

    wishing safety among the residents.

Would be nice if the investigation into this tragic collapse could be conducted without being marinated in 190 proof partisan politics like EVERY damn thing else nowadays.....I ain't gonna hold my breath though.

Researchers found condo had been sinking into Earth at alarming rate
A researcher at Florida International University said the building was constructed on reclaimed wetlands and was determined to be unstable a year ago.

The building was sinking at a rate of about 2 millimeters a year in the 1990s, and the sinking could have slowed or accelerated in the time since, according to a 2020 study conducted by Shimon Wdowinski, a professor in the Department of Earth and Environment at Florida International University.

“I looked at this morning and said ‘Oh my god.’ We did detect that,” he said of the Champlain Towers South.

The level of subsidence observed in the 1990s can results in impacts to buildings and their structures, such as cracked walls or shifting foundations, Wdowinski said.

This is local for me. It’s an old condo. Sink hole hs to be the only logical explanation but we’ll see. I truly hope most who died just thought it was a brief bad dream and then it was over before they thought they woke up. Being buried alive is quite a horrible way to go.

Having lived in Miami for a couple of years, I have witnessed widespread incompetence and corruption of the work force first hand. I suspect shoddy workmanship because of cutting corners, maybe paying off the inspectors to look the other way...
