To play lotto, lets say 6/49, you need to pick 6 correct numbers from 49 numbers. the winning chance is 6/49 X 5/48 X 4/47 X 3/46 X 2/45 X 1/44. let's say there is a mini lotto, you need to pick 4 correct numbers from 8 numbers. the winning chance is 4/8 X 3/7 X 2/6 X 1/5 = 1/70. what is the winning chance, if you pay more money, and you can pick 5 numbers per entry?
Not sure I understand the question. Pick 5 from what? The eight in the last example? Then I guess it'd be 5/8 x 4/7 x 3/6 x 2/5 x 1/6, but that seems like too easy an answer, so I'm guessing I don't quite understand what the question is.
This poster has been asking questions that lack a common denominator... It's mathematical gibberish..
Again, you really need to be more specific with your questions and wording because it’s not entirely clear what you’re asking. It would significantly increase your odds of getting replies. If you mean a game with 8 numbers from which 5 are drawn and you have to guess all five (irrelevant of order); The odds of winning by chance is 5/8 * 4/7 * 3/6 * 2/5 * 1/4 = 1/56 If you mean a game with 8 numbers from which 4 are drawn and you pick five numbers that those four have to be in; I think the odds of winning by chance is 5/8 * 4/7 * 3/6 * 2/5 = 1/14 This involves a number of assumptions about the style of lottery in question.
Don't play the lottery by the odds. I once heard the story of a guy who calculated the odds of winning the lottery and then poured all of his assets, money, what have you into buying lottery tickets. He lost. When he sued the lottery commission claiming that by the odds he should have won he lost the case as well.
I have heard of a case where a group of people pooled their money to play every possible combination, guaranteeing the win, once the jackpot became large enough to offset the cost and make it worthwhile. They risk having to share the jackpot, and so there is no guarantee. I don't know if this is urban legend or not.
after I said you cant think, you must be too sad. you do not know how to do math question. - - - Updated - - - If you mean a game with 8 numbers from which 4 are drawn and you pick five numbers that those four have to be in; I think the odds of winning by chance is 5/8 * 4/7 * 3/6 * 2/5 = 1/14 This is the answer.
Thanks. I understand part(a), (a) If a game with 8 numbers from which 4 are drawn and I have to guess all four (irrelevant of order); The odds of winning by chance is 4/8 * 3/7 * 2/6 * 1/5 = 1/70. (b) If a game with 8 numbers from which 4 are drawn and I pick five numbers that those four have to be in; you sad the odds of winning by chance is 5/8 * 4/7 * 3/6 * 2/5 = 1/14. please give me some explanation for part (b). --
