Hello, for certain reasons I will not disclose my full name. I will only tell you my first name is Tyler. My username, Virtus, means strong, power, courage, and strength in Latin. I am aware there are other words for this, but I chose this one. I am interested in posting and reading topics in mostly world politics but sometimes the smaller stuff. I intend to go into politics when I am older. As of right now im 14 years old and a freshman in high school. I hope you will not discriminate by age, because everyone must start somewhere. With that I hope I will be able to post and talk about politics a lot here.

Hello and welcome, Tyler! You are rather young to have an interest in politics - I was the same, though! Glad you could join us! :)

Hello Tyler, and welcome to the board. I started posting on political fora at the age of 12, so I will not be one to discriminate on the basis of age. I am glad to make the acquaintance of someone else who did Latin at school - we appear to be in the minority here. Probably the most important Latin phrase to remember is ars longa, vita brevis.

Now all you need to bear in mind for a beautiful friendship between us, is that I am much (four years) older than you, am incomparably more experienced in life and love, and that all my pronouncements are ex cathedra.

A 14 year old who uses commas in the right place, uses apostrophes in the right place, and doesn't start every sentence with a lower case letter.

Hmmm, if it's true, I'm impressed.

I don't find it all that unusual. I have been posting here since I was not yet 16, and elsewhere since I was 12. You get criticised for sloppy spelling and grammar, and you pick up your game very quickly.

And why would anyone misrepresent himself as being younger than he is? When I was first posting on boards, I said I was 3 years older - you get no extra cred for being younger. People take more notice if they think you are older. So there is no rational motive for saying you are younger.

If his grammar and spelling is excellent, why not just congratulate him on it? And if he is a bit boastful; I see that as evidence that he is perhaps a touch less mature than we - and I make due allowance.

And finally, experience has taught me that it takes guts to enter into debate with people many times your age - so good luck, Virtus! :)

    Welcome Virtus/Tyler!
Nice to see a young man focus on learning more about the world (and not only the world of politics).

I hope you will be able to not only learn from ALL sides, but also share your own opinions and benefit from the more interesting debates in this forum, while ignoring those "discussions" that are worthless because of the vitriol, the slander, and the general extremism and propaganda that they spew.

The trick is to recognize the differences in quality of debates.

    Leo,...

I was applauding him for his good grammer and spelling...

I hadn't any bad intentions whatsoever,...

Seems to me you haven't had a good day or got out of bed with the wrong leg or something...

    :peace:

(Edit: I understand why you posted what you did now I've re-read the post on which I replied orginally -- I missed that remark about "if it is true". Obviously I'm of the opinion that it is true. Why wouldn't it be? :twocents:)

I am having a great day (actually very late night here) Janpor, but you seemed to be agreeing with Uncle Meat who concluded his comments with -
That struck me as rather ungracious (and surprising from Uncle Meat whose posts I respect a lot) and even more surprising from you, who have often championed the younger posters here.

But I sincerely apologise for misinterpreting your post and your intentions. SORRY!

    ...

Well, I'm truely embarrassed by misspelling "grammar" (grammer).

But, on the other hand, I'm sure y'all don't know how to write it in Dutch and French!

LOL, you are not wrong there! I did neither Dutch nor French at school. But I hope you won't mind me pointing out that 'y'all' is not a legitimate English word (you is the collective form of you), and that truly is not spelt 'truely'. :-D

This is not a criticism, and your English spelling and grammar are better than half the posters here (including myself). :)

Welcome/Croeso Virtus. 'I'm older than most hills (they call me Sir)' but I too study Latin, in an evening class in my case. Keep at it while you can.

    'Soles occidere et redire possunt:
Nobis cum semel occidit brevis lux
    Nox est perpetua una dormienda.'

    Cheery stuff!

    Well,...

    Thanks, Leo.

Although I like to say that, technically, I know that "y'all" isn't a correct English word. It is just my personal protest to show that I think that is absurd. Every language has a plural form of "you": jullie (Dutch), "julle" (Afrikaans), "ihr" (German), "vous" (French), "vostotros" (Spanish), etc.

And "y'all" slides so easily over your tong -- it's sort of amazing, like in French you roll your "r". Fantastic!

    You are so right, Janpor!
So easy to criticize people who speak more than one language. . .
