Today I saw a bumper sticker on the back of a car that said "Abortion Survivor". (This refers to a mother getting an abortion but the fetus ends up surviving and eventually later being born. It's rare but sometimes the abortion procedure "misses" the fetus. Or sometimes the mother was pregnant with twins and they didn't realize there was another twin hiding in there. It's not uncommon for a failed abortion procedure to do bodily damage to the fetus that can leave that person with lifelong injury or disability) It got me thinking about how common this could actually be. Apparently no one is keeping records or statistics, so we can't really know what the prevalence actually is. And people usually don't talk about this, if it's happened to them or happened in their family. On the conservative side, it's usually too embarrassing and shameful for women to talk about it. That they tried to get an abortion but their child survived. Probably many women never even tell their child what they tried to do. On the progressive pro-choice side, probably many women don't want to talk about what happened to them because they fear the story could just be used by the pro-life side and will cultivate a negative perception of abortion. Some might have difficulty believing that a person who knows they are an abortion survivor could still support abortion. But it's really not actually that surprising. In ancient times, there were many slaves who, after gaining their freedom, went on to own their own slaves. And it's not uncommon for persons who were the victims of childhood sexual abuse to later go on to abuse other children. Whoever owned that car was trying to speak out and let the world know that they were an "Abortion Survivor". That it does exist and there are people in society among us who would not be here if the abortion that was committed against them had been successful.
