That description of de-personalization seems like it could fit either of our understandings of the veil-wearing tradition: to make individual women less likely to stand out, to any given man (thereby reducing covetous inclinations, infidelity, & lust driven contentiousness); or, to show women as inferior, I suppose (though not as clearly).

Of course, since peer pressure is one of the main drivers in creating human cultures, you are saying that that living in society, itself, is a submissive act. While there may be something to that, we are, nevertheless, a communal species, so maybe the takeaway should be that having the ability to submit, when necessary, is a vital characteristic among humans. I must also point out that peer pressure helps promote other group behaviors, at least some of which, throughout history, you must believe were beneficial (and, if spearheaded by leaders, were proffered in good faith). This gets to the sometimes murky line between peer-pressure & cooperation.

That the men make the rules, and that men in the muslim societies are exempted from the requirement suggests that women are seen as inferior, however necessary they may be.

Yes, each individual must learn to submit to authority and various social practices. Of course, some individuals are more or less submissive than others. Peer pressure can be good, or it can be bad.

I like the old saying "When tyranny is abroad, submission is a crime".
