This is easily one of my favorite game series of all time, one that I've been playing for nearly eight years now. There's a total of three games, including an expansion for the first two, and two expansions for the third game. There's even an online MMO version of the game available.

So is there any AOE fans here, and if so, who would like to go up against me in an online match?

I like it, but more of a total war kind of guy.

A friend of mine gave me AoE2 and the expansion for my 13th birthday and I played it extensively. I later lost the discs but found a pack at Staples with both AoE 1&2 and their respective expansions. I played a little AoE1 but never really got into it. I've also played Age of Mythology and the Titans expansion. I didn't especially like the expansion but the base game was pretty fun.

Yeah AoE is OK. It doesn't nearly have the depth or epicness of Plants vs Zombies though.

I play the AOE 2 The Age of Kings.

Awesome game! But I can't find a d/l for the trial of the expansion. All links are broken. Maybe because it's an old game. I want it because it automates a bit better, like you can recharge your farms ahead of time.

I won't play you though because I'm not that good. I play casually just to kill time, I'm not really a competitive player of any game.

I like how you can choose your formations and aggression/engagement level of your forces. So you can coordinate battles like a real leader. Like you can have your cavalry run free to chop up enemy archers while your infantry hold a line to prevent the passage of enemy cavalry. I can't think of another RTS that offers this. British are the best because the longbow kicks ass, out-ranging castles and towers, yet more mobile than the trebueget.

I love playing as the British. I'm terrible at multiplayer but I like surrounding my town with castles full of elite longbowmen. On top of that I have a garrison of cavalry on standby should a bombard cannon or trebuchet make its way towards me.

I played Age of Empires II back in the 90s - it's pretty dated though, and I've never been a huge fan of RTS games. In fact I think playing though a single full match in multiplayer could easily take hours on end.

They are the best. Add in a couple of priests to heal your troops and nothing is going to get past the longbow.

Except maybe an army of war elephants. Monks can convert some of them but they're pretty tough to take down with archers in mass.

Yeah but it's easier to build an army of archers than war elephants.

As a matter of fact, I have AOE 3, but I need to get used to it again. That, coupled with Medieval 2: Total War, are easily my top favorite games of all time.

I like building an economy (AOK) but you always get rushed or attacked before youve built anything near the city you would like. Havent played in a year or so..but yeah, Brits are good but you'll find the Koreans normally kick a$$ for some reason lol, all depends on the map isuppose.

Oh hell yes! I cut my RTS teeth on the AoE series. I always felt Starcraft could never compare.

Age of Mythology, another Ensemble Studio's creation was also great.

AoE 2 is my favorite of the series. I still consider it the quintessential RTS. Such a shame Microsoft dissolved ES.

I bought AoE 2 HD edition off steam a few months ago, I would recommencement all the fans to do the same. It makes it look so much nicer on the high def screen of today. The much improved multiplayer and community content is also great. I haven't played it in a while as I have been busy playing Rome 2 Total war of late.

Yeah, I typically get dominated by people in multiplayer who have reflexes and micro/macro abilities of steel. I remember in one match after about 10-15 minutes I had finished setting up my town and had created my first full stack army. I was feeling confident and began to move out to attack my opponent. I got a little ways out into the fog of war and ran into an enemy castle... and another castle... and another... and another.... this guy had moved so fast that he had built an entire ring of castles around my city without me knowing. He then typed "here comes the rape train" or something to that effect into the chat and a veritable horde of viking berserkers flooded into my city and destroyed it in a couple of minutes.

I still play AOE II but Age of Mythology is my favorite.

I don't care for AOE III, and the new online MMO is awful.

    Haha!

Man you guys have brought back some memories for sure. I used to spend days and weeks on end playing AOE II online. Im pretty sure I lost a good 3 solid years of my life on that game. I think it was Microsoft game studio or whatever the online server thing was called. I was in the clans "TC" and "EoAoE" back then. We used to spank people day and night. See if I can remember some things....

    Pikemen > Cavalry
    Seige Onagars > Teutonic Knights
    Cavalry > Champions
Archers > Eagle Warriors and infantry

Oh and using the Turks meant you were cheating lol

    Lovely memories!

I remember AoM. I like the "Vikings" as you had to constantly fight to up your resources. Made them feel like an actual group of violent, savage warriors out for blood. :)

AoE 3 is fun albeit I mostly play the British much of the time.

The one RTS that I probably liked above all the others was Empire Earth though. Only the first two though the third one sucked balls big time.
