Unions were first created to help create a more safe and fair workplace. Are they still necessary to be used in the twenty first century when working conditions are exponentially better than what they used to be?
isn't that like saying that roofs were once needed because it rained into our house, but now since we have roofs it hasn't rained into our house for very long. therefore we don't need roofs anymore. Unions are what keeps working conditions at a good level.
Unions were founded to protect the interests of workers, not to improve workplace conditions. As workers are still oppressed under the capitalist system unions are still relevant.
Public unions do have to be outlawed, that just seems to be common sense that you can't have a union able to buy politicians with taxpayer money they get by holding the taxpayer hostage. But private unions ones do not make for safer work environments. Working in a specific industry with or without a union has shown no real statistical difference, and over time because of loss of capitalization to the union, pressures to refrain from automation, union jobs become more dangerous then free businesses. This is just something unions like to take credit for. What they should factor in about workplace safety is that you are far more likely to get hit in the head, have your car smashed in at work if you happen to to cross a union line, or simply work for the postal union. Lawyers keep you safe at work. When you get hurt on the job, they are the ones that make the company pay, and put you back together. Business owners are scared of lawyers, it makes them conform to safety procedures.
