We've been good allies. Apparently that means nothing to Trump. The view here is that Trump sees everything in transactions. He prefers win-lose though. The idea of win-win seems to be alien to him. He can only think in terms of a deal, not what might strengthen long-held alliances. That's a problem in international relations. On the plus side it will cause Australia to grow up a bit and start looking at regional alliances more. We can't and shouldn't rely on the US to assist us defend ourselves. That means we should look elsewhere. Of course that might mean the US loses a solid ally with strategic assets in the area in the South Pacific/South East Asia but no doubt Trump has thought of that and understands the ramifications.

 

If it hasn't been ratified by congress, it isn't legally binding in any sense. It was nothing more than a conversation with an ex-president who isn't in office any more.

 

You know, instead of looking for someone else to defend you, you could consider defending yourselves.
