Iraq needs a complete new energy grid worth 15 billion $. For months Germany was in negotiations with the iraqi government to build this grid. The contract was almost signed when suddenly trump stepped up, threatend the iraqi government. Remembered them "7000 americans" died to "free them from Saddam" and issued a warning that they MUST sign the contract with american company GE and cancel the negotiations with Germany.

    https://www.powermag.com/reports-trump-administration-supports-ge-over-siemens-in-15b-iraq-deal/

It looked like Siemens was out of the business until chancellor Merkel stepped in and offered Iraq to build several hospitals, create jobs in the thousands and add a development project.

Iraq cancelled the MoU they signed with GE and signed a new contract with Siemens:

    http://www.iraq-businessnews.com/2018/10/21/siemens-wins-11gw-iraq-power-contract/

    "
Siemens’ Iraq Roadmap outlines eight objectives to benefit the people of Iraq, the country’s national security and its economic development. These include reducing energy losses, introducing smart grids, strengthening the transmission grid, modernizing existing power plants, adding new generation capacities in deprived areas, connecting Iraq to the Arab Gulf region, putting Iraq’s national resources to work, and investing in its people.

Modernizing the country’s energy infrastructure is intended to be completed in stages, from immediate improvement for up to 300,000 people, which can be operational within three months, to medium and long-term projects that require between 10 and 24 months’ completion time and beyond. The company will also assist Iraq’s government in securing appropriate finance packages provided by international commercial banks, Export Credit Agencies and supported by the German Government.

The roadmap lays out plans to use Iraq’s valuable natural resources more efficiently by utilizing flare gas capture and treatment technologies to deliver a domestic source of fuel to Iraq’s power generation sector, as well as create a long-term source of revenue for the government to finance power generation, transmission, and distribution projects.

As part of its commitment to driving sustainable growth, Siemens intends to support social development in Iraq with a series of training and education programs. This includes technical and vocational training as well as transparency and anti-corruption education, in order to build a pool of highly skilled, local talent with a culture of compliance. Under the patronage of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Siemens aims to provide vocational training, starting with 1,000 young Iraqis."

American based GE is in deep financial trouble and was in dire need of the contract.

But losing this to Germany will propably not be the only effect for GE.

German state airline Lufthansa announced they won´t order GE engines for their next ordered 15 A350 aircrafts.

Honestly i wonder what was trump thinking? That Germany stands aside and allows him to push german business out of competition?

The irony is, that Trump only had threats while Germany has almost unlimited amounts of money to spend.

At last NATO summit, Trump compained that Germany has so enormous budget surplus, it could raise its military budget not just to 2% but to 6% from one day to the other without even feelig it.

Exactly this gigantic budget surplus was used now for defense...against american unfair practices.

    Your tax money well spent!
I guess Siemens couldn’t get the deal without a subsidy from Germany government at taxpayers expense - a portion of your taxes just went directly to Siemens owners pockets.
And the fact that you brag about it just makes it even more hilarious!

Siemens already had the deal until Trump intervened and Iraq cancelled teh deal and made a memorandum of understanding with American GE. Then teh chancellor stepped up and kicked GE out of the game by using some of teh massive budget surplus Germany has. All in all Merkel used 4 billion €.

We just took 13 billion € from Apple.

The problem you have is, that you dont understand the Germans system. Its called the "Deutschland AG". Corporations, banks, politics work as one. Siemens is a perfect example for this.

They now got the deal and invest into plants in weaker german regions to please the people there who will vote the politicians who crushed GE.

GE is in extreme financial crisis already. Some more such blows and they might get bancrupt

Beside that there is a polticial component. We cant allow trump to ruin our business by threatening our business partners.

And because of that its so important that GE does not only lose this contract but also gets punished by Germany itself. Lufthansa cancelling its ordered GE engines for the A350 is the right thing to do in that case.

btw what amazes me is your crooked understanding of capitalism. Both GE And Siemens made an offer. Iraq chose Siemens because it had the better offer. Then your president stepped in and tried to force Iraq to take the GE offer.

I ask you honestly, do you suggest Germany to stand aside then and watch and do nothing?

Should Germany always step back in its interest and ask USA before offereing a contract? How much contracts are you willing to allow us to have?

Its a honest question because i dont understand why you want Germany to accept something that you yourself woud never accept.

Irans official position is the absolute destruction of Israel and that's why we need sanctions. They must not be allowed to get nukes but Germany of course doesn't really care what the end result of that may be. History repeats itself.

    Gibberish on Steroids.

    1) That is not the "official position" if Iran
    2) Part of the Saudi curriculum is hatred for Jews, Christians and even Muslims who they figure are not doing it properly (Shia, Ismali, Sufi and so on) .. yet we happily do business with the Saud. Heck we even help them to promote their extremist Islamist ideology.

At the end of the day - the idea that the average Iraqi does not hate the US with a passion is just flawed.

Similar to how the average Saudi citizen hates Israel - yet somehow when it comes to politics they are "best friends".

Is their official position the complete destruction of Israel?

Politicians do things for political reasons .. no surprise in that. What is laughable is the wording "a homeland" - meaning a homeland other than on the second holiest place to Islam.

Regardless - this does not change the fact that most every Saudi hates Israel - and that Saudi Children are taught to hate Jews as part of the curriculum.

Nor does this change the fact that it is not the official state position of Iran that Israel be destroyed.

Thanks for what? I think you are quite unaware about things outside your country.

I live in Thüringen, the german central state. We have no americans here. In 2014 your army asked oir minister president to open a hospital in Thüringen to treat your soldiers who recieved massive stab wounds in Iraq and Afghanistan. Thüringen is can be faster reached by aircraft than Rammstein base, which is the american base.

The answer of our ministerpresident was, that she would rather open a pig farm there.

Is that a thank you enough?

Trying to threat Iraq to cancel a deal with Germany is normal for you? In german culture thats not normal.

In our culture you make an offer and win with the best offer, not with threats.

He is and that makes it even better. So far Trump lost evry conflict with Germany.

He wanted that we raise our military budget, we denie that. He wanted that we cancel nordstream 2 pipeline with russia, we build it. We trade with Iran, punish american companies like apple and google. He threatened tariffs on us and in end we put tariffs on american products but he did not target us. He only bluffs.

Beside that trump is 2 years president and still no official state visit in Germany. Thats strange cobsidering German position in the world.

We do ha ha ha ha about Brexit. The UK is in chaos and plans a 2nd referendum. Scotland and Northern Ireland threaten to leave the UK. We just sit there and wtach their internal chaos and make no concessions.

What we want? Fairness. Do you want your president to threaten german business partners to cancel contracts with us?
