The corporatist initiative, at least as a first step, is framed as a fight against COVID disinformation, Politico revealed in a report on Monday.

“Biden allied groups, including the Democratic National Committee, are also planning to engage fact-checkers more aggressively and work with SMS carriers to dispel misinformation about vaccines that is sent over social media and text messages,” Politico said in an alarming passage. “The goal is to ensure that people who may have difficulty getting a vaccination because of issues like transportation see those barriers lessened or removed entirely.”

“We are steadfastly committed to keeping politics out of the effort to get every American vaccinated so that we can save lives and help our economy further recover,” White House spokesperson Kevin Munoz said. “When we see deliberate efforts to spread misinformation, we view that as an impediment to the country’s public health and will not shy away from calling that out.”

The restriction of Americans’ text messages is an escalation in a bid to censor dissenting views on hot-button issues such as the 2020 election and vaccines.

This appears to be an announcement of more big government control over the content of private citizens communications. The telecom companies don’t have section 230 protection and have different regulations than big tech social media does.

This news is shocking and scary. Government seems to want controls over what we can read from others and what we can send to them.

Government using corporations to do their bidding. The combination is eerily reminiscent of fascist Germany in the 30s.

Yah and I’m sure those tests of the emergency broadcast system back in the day were because it made so much money for the networks!

They were tests and they still do it today. Cable companies are required to have an EAS (emergency alert system) wired to every channel they send out to the public and they are religiously tested and documented. The thing is they’re tests and send out no message other than they’re tests.

You are unaware of government and corporation agreements to censure SMS messages?

Should concern you but like 1930s Germany they weren’t coming for you.

Ok I very may be putting my foot in my own mouth and some younger folks may laugh at my ignorance here but....

Can phone carriers actually read your text messages when you send them out? Is that a thing? I've always assumed that the records are stored somewhere for some period of time and could be accessed via court order or something if necessary. But I mean can verizon or whoever just read your messages at will if they so desire? Legally? I understand that sites like Facebook can see what you post on there and ban you or whatever as it happens all the time but that's a bit different than private phone conversations. Unless I missed something big in the user agreement I would assume that would be illegal....

If not then how exactly could they actively monitor what someone is texting and block them from spreading COVID "misinformation?" And if they already can do that then I guess I really am as old and out of touch with this stuff as my co workers tell me every day....

Funny how the subject title says “censor” but the story says something else.

This thread sort of proved how important it is to dispel misinformation.

    :bored:

ANOTHER RW OPINION Thread Cluttering Up The Current Events Forum? :roflol: :bored:

The Following paragraph CLEARLY Represents an Opinion:

The Politico report, ironically, also mentions Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who compared the administration’s vaccine campaign to Nazis. But it is hard to argue that Americans who are concerned about mass censorship and intimidation over their personal decisions are entirely off-base being concerned about the historical parallels.

^And, after about 99+ of these Opinion Threads (Wrongly Posted in Current Events), some people still haven't gotten the memo?:bored:

Anyway, on-topic, as to the actual OP Opinion:

The whole issue seems like much ado about nothing (and more faux outrage) from the "Lookie Here, Biden Bad" crowd.

The OP article is a complete mischaracterization of this "initiative" (a mischaracterization pushed by the Chicken Little Crowd).

Care to fill me in then?

Regardless of the reasonings behind it how exactly could my phone carrier know what I'm saying via text in order to dispel COVID misinformation without being given access to read the text messages I send out?

Or can/do they already do that. Legitimate question

Jesus. Thus new Era of democrats is seriously taking multiple plays right out of the Facist play book.

    It's so dangerous.

Has it ever occurred to Biden and his staff that maybe people aren't ok with putting a vaccine into their body that was adequate tested and tried... that it might be a conscience and logical decision on their part?

No no no. It must be mis-information. We need to go door to door, prevent people from spreading these invalidated lies (not opinions).

What happened to "my body, my choice"?

    ****ing hypocrites.

Interesting. The FCC voted to allow the censorship to combat robotexts and spam and has failed to do either. Either that or I have a lot of cars in need of a warrantee.

I don’t see censure, in fact both articles are very vague. Will it not go through? Will it be with a disclaimer?

Our Gov started sending out emergency alert messages for "Everyone be safe. Wear a mask and social distance!" It wouldn't have been so bad if it didn't go out one night at 11PM, 2 am and 4 am. People were not happy. I get spam texts quite a bit. Mostly from the two parties. I finally just changed my voter registration to independent and that has helped some.

    .

Tucker Carlson talked about this topic tonight on his FOX News channel show... which is repeated at midnight central time.

That’s part of the basis of Trumps suit vs big tech social media. Them acting as agents of government to censor opposing viewpoints and persons.

It is their news coverage of the Politico news story. Suck it up and deal with it. It’s news. Politico reporting on an involved political leaders comments in their news report doesn’t make it an opinion story. You liberals on this site griping how outside sources decide what’s news and what’s opinion is getting to be quite annoying. I will always seed here how it’s designated at its source regardless of what site liberals think or want.

We are lucky he is not an actual mod (much as he seems to feel he is) ever notice he only complains about RW content?
Almost like he wants any RW content buried in the forum.

Anyhow, back on topic (because that means you can talk about anything else, right?) They actively monitor text messages?

Yes they can. They are stored for a fixed amount of time. It requires a subpoena to see by law enforcement, but the NSA is sneaky.
