    You weren't.
They are doing exactly what you did.
Then, later, they cll themselves "Christians."

Most of the illegitimate babies born (2/3rds) are by single, never married, girls who check off "Christian," in the reports that are taken.

How do you feel about the rise in births, which are by unmarried women, (1.5 million), and total half of the birth rate?
Is that, since 1965, added to the 1.2 million annual Abortions a sign that "actions to prevent as much as we can" doesn't work?

Preaching something and practicing it are two different things.

The Bible does not say much about promiscuity and what it does say does not condemn it.

The majority if not all of the OT Patriarchs (including Abraham and Moses down through David and Solomon) had concubines. It is even in the Mosaic law that a Father gives a slave girl to his son for sex she is to be treated well.

Jesus does not condemn sexual promiscuity You will find later puritan translators changing the meaning of certain words to make it look that way but on close inspection Jesus has little to say about promiscuity.

Check out the number of times the Old Testament complains about the whoredoms of the gentiles and the rise of the same practice against god's word...

here's one of the 50 examples:

    Genesis 38:24
And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.

Well their numbers may be much smaller than you now believe.

Did you know that 2/3rds of the 1.2 million annual Abortions, (800,000), are by supposedly Christian girls who check that off on the paper work they fill out????

What is meant by "whoredom" in this case ? Please do your homework before blurting stuff out like it means something.

The Israelites did not burn people simply on the basis if pre-marital sex in general.

Also, you completely ignored the examples I presented as if they did not exist.

Because you assume that is how gentiles act. I have never been promiscuous, does that mean I act like a Christian?

    2) the Jews normally stoned wayward harlots to death.

    1) Whoredom means this girl took money from Judah for have a sexual relationship with him.

We can not just go by one example, like your own.

The point is that Christianity teaches sexual prudence.
The non-religious world of Atheism supports promiscuous Gay and straight sexual relationships, abortions, pornography, etc.

    NOW

It doesn't matter what Christianity TEACHES. It matters what Christians DO. Just because someone is promiscuous doesn't mean they aren't making some attempt to follow the teachings of Christ, and that makes them a Christian, no matter how badly you want to play the No True Scotsman card.

Atheism says exactly nothing about promiscuity, homosexuality, or any of that other stuff. It shows precisely zero "support" for any of it. Of course, it shows no condemnation of it either. That's because it's TOTALLY UNRELATED.

Wrong on both counts. Did you actually read the passage you quoted .. as in more than 2 lines ?

Why are you making things up ? I realize that perhaps you are not up on OT history and so forth but this is no reason to make things up willy nilly.

You did not even bother to read the Bible passage to context of what the girl had done wrong. If you had you would realize that it had nothing to do with "pre-marital" sex because the girl was married and so the crime was adultery.

If you read the passage you would realize that the Israelites did not stone prostitutes.

Do you understand what is going on here ? Tamer was "obtained" to be the wife of one of Judah's sons. That son dies so he "Gives" Tamer to his other son for his sexual use to have a child.

Tamer is an owned piece of property because that's how things were back then. Adultery is "a woman having sex outside of marriage" .. it is not adultery for a man to have sex outside of marriage.

To have sex with another mans wife was akin to stealing another mans property or rather using it without consent. There was no such prohibition for men.

Tamer was to live as a widow until Judah's younger son Shelah grew up. You see, Tamer was a piece of property to be given to whomever Judah chose.

Now read the bolded parts. Judah is perfectly fine with sleeping with a prostitute. There is no prohibition of this and nor is there anything wrong.

They negotiate the price and it is a goat.

Temple prostitutes were common at the time, called a shrine prostitute here. The Israelites did not stone such women, they had sex with them when they wanted.

Judah sent the goat to what he thought was a shrine prostitute but there turned out not to be one there.

When Tamer was found to be pregnant the crime was adultery. A crime for which one could be stoned.

    1) Next time please at least read enough to understand the context of the passage you are quoting
    2) Your claim that the Israelites stoned prostitutes is utter nonsense
    3) Your claim that this passage has anything to do with pre-marital sex is baseless.
    4) Prostitution was not the crime. The crime was a married woman having sex (it just happened to be that the form she chose in this case was prostitution)

I was referring to what the Old Testament reported at the time of Moses, which tells us that every society in the world was worshipping the Mythologies which were based upon the stars:

    Deuteronomy 4:19
And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them, which the Lord thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven.

These mythological Gods included Istar and Eros type worshippers in every case.
Only the monotheism of Moses existed as an alternative.

    ?
What do you call trading property or money for sex, except prostitution???

“And what will you give me to sleep with you?” she asked.

Maher reminds me of Luddite Hippies (or the Khmer Rouge primitivists) who think all our problems come from modernity. Religion, like technology, is a TOOL, a powerful one too. It has great power to work evil, but also great power to do good. The challenge is in how we use it, not having it at all.

The placebo effect can be quite powerful sometimes too. And yet, many people have a problem with doctors prescribing things purely for their placebo effect. Granted, that is a little different because the doctor KNOWS the treatment has nothing curative in it. But the point remains: just because a tool is effective, does that mean you should use it if you think it is dishonest?

Prostitution was not a crime Judah had no problem with prostitutes at temple shrines and even used them from time to time as he wished.

You do no understand OT Law the cultural norms of the time.

It was a crime for a "married woman" to sleep with a man other than her husband while her husband was still alive. A woman was property of the man was she was married to a man or given to a man in marriage.

Obviously Tamer was thought to have committed this crime, in this case they thought she was being a prostitute.

This was a very specific violation of the law prohibiting a married woman to have sex outside of marriage. There was no law prohibiting pre-marital sex for men. There was no law prohibiting un-married women from being prostitutes and temple prostitutes were common and accepted.

It was suggested that the wives of religious leaders should be virgins and that their daughters should not be temple prostitutes.

You are trying to take a specific law and extend to mean something it simply did not.

I think the evidence weighs against you here, since the verse tells us that Tamara was a Harlot, (sexually promiscuous woman).

But she also compound the issue by asking for w reward for sex, which is prostitution:

    Genesis 38:24
And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.

Temple Prostitutes were a well respected part of the city states.

Other non-temple prostitutes were not well respected as they were in competition with the Temple Prostitutes.

Charity in those days came mostly from the temples and that is why there was little respect given to those prostitutes who were not selected by and for the temples.

Prostitutes were to work for God and not just men.

Remember that the word bread and money are synonymous because the Temple Prostitutes were paid in coin that bought grain from which bread was made. That is why we call money, bread.

Tamar was not a Harlot. The child was not by whoredom as we know from the story. We know from the story that Judah was mistaken about Tamar as the child was from Judah.

There is no condemnation of pre-marital sex in the story. What is condemned is a married woman who becomes a whore.

What we do know from the story is that Judah likes to have sex with Prostitutes and there is no condemnation of prostitution in general.

The condemnation is when a girl who is married plays the whore.
