Harlem is famous for being an African American neighborhood in New York City.

But it appears that Black people may soon be eliminated from this neighborhood.

As of July 2022, median asking rents in East Harlem, the least expensive part of the Harlem neighborhood, are now $2,400, up 14.6 percent since 2021.

It's $2,500 in Central Harlem and $2,650 in West Harlem, up 8.7 and 15.6 percent respectively.

It is true that the city has been gentrifying in recent years, since about the year 2000. But even as recently as 2010, the neighborhood was still 63% African American.

As of June 2022, median rent per month for an available apartment in Manhattan is $4,100. Technically the neighborhood of Harlem is just within the borough of Manhattan, but it is the least expensive part, on the northern edge. For Brooklyn it is $3,200 and for Queens it is $2,600.

Newly released census data confirms what many in Harlem already knew: the neighborhood is rapidly gentrifying.
Across East, Central and West Harlem, the neighborhood's Black population declined by 10,805 people between 2010 and 2020, according to newly released data from last year's census. The number of Hispanic people dropped by 2,015.
Where will these black people go? Well, some of them might have to move across the river to Newark, New Jersey. Others might scatter and move to various cities in the Northern part of New York State. Or they might move to Baltimore or Philadelphia, which are along the 95 corridor between D.C. and N.Y.C. Minneapolis has been another popular destination.
